NCTB’s The League has been a perennial location for the best seventh and eighth grade athletes to be challenged before entering high school and over three looks in five weeks, I’ve gotten a good understanding of the class in Northern California. Rashad Hayes (2025, Oakland, Calif.) has the long-term look of a premium player who is going to stick at short. Uber-athletic with twitch and bounce, Hayes continues to make plays look easy at shortstop with very strong range, ability to execute on the move and the arm to make all the plays. The approach at the plate is advanced with an ability to recognize pitches early and stay locked to the zone; he’s willing to take the walk. The swing is controlled, yet aggressive, and shows the ability to drive balls gap-to-gap. Add in his ability to grab bags and go first-to-third without issues and you’ve got the looks of one of the tops in the class.
