Iowa Spring League Notebook: Week 3

Perfect Game Staff

Joey Oakie (2024, Ankeny, Iowa) threw his first warm up pitch of the day at 94 mph and did not disappoint in the rest of his performance. Oakie went on to throw three innings collecting four strikeouts, no base on balls, and one earned run. Oakie also adds a wicked slider that dips all the way down to 76 mph, keeping hitters honest. He has elite separation in his upper body and creates a ton of whip with explosive arm speed. Oakie was working the whole zone this weekend and showed some cut on his fastball as well. Oakie has already proved to show unlimited upside as a pitcher and continues to perform each outing. With another year left in high school he has a bright future and is undoubtedly attracting attention from MLB scouts. Oakie is the #1 ranked right-handed pitcher in Iowa and is Committed to the University of Iowa.

Ryan Drumm (2023, Madison, Wisc.) made some noise at the plate this weekend. Drumm has a 5-foot-11, 200-pound frame and has present strength. Drumm was jumping on strikes early in the count, taking what he could and still pounding balls, he finished his weekend with three hits including a triple, three walks and four runs batted in, touching home three times himself. He has one of the more polished swings you see for his age group, he starts with a taller, even-set stance, low hands, keeps it simple in his load and has great hand speed that works fluently with his lower body. Stays connected throughout the entirety of his swing. Drumm also threw a couple innings on the mound and collected four strikeouts while running his fastball up to 87. Massive two-way upside and a very intriguing player to watch going forward. Drumm is committed to Butler University.



Kade Knock (2023, Swisher, Iowa) is walking away from this weekend as one of the top performers to step up to the plate. Knock added five hits including a double, a triple and six runs batted in. Knock showed big time productivity and power at the bottom of the lineup for Iowa Select 2023 Scout. Knock has already shown improvements throughout the course of the spring and is on his way to have himself a big summer. Knock showed his big time pull side power by just missing a home run as he ripped a triple off the right field wall in one of his final plate appearances of the day. Knock is a crafty player and at first glance won’t blow you away with his size, but he is a guy you can rely on in any situation to get the job done on offense and defense. Lots of upside, showed good speed in the outfield, strength to be added, committed to Kirkwood Community College.

Maddux Frese (2023, Norway, Iowa) is always a must watch when he is on the field. Frese, primarily a shortstop, hits at the top of the lineup for Iowa Select 2023 Scout. Frese is walking away from Saturday with a productive four hits, three walks, and two stolen bases. Frese has a smooth swing that starts with a slightly open stance and a short leg kick. Frese has a mature stature and approach at the plate, rarely do you see him chasing pitches outside of the zone. He is able to place the ball anywhere on the field and has plus speed to turn singles into doubles. Frese also shines on defense with one of the best gloves in this league he is a sure handed shortstop that you see make outstanding plays every single game. Southeastern Community College commit.

Brady Andrews (2026, Ankeny, Iowa) had another impressive day on the mound throwing three no-hit innings on his way to a win for Iowa Select 2026 Scout. Andrews collected three strikeouts while sitting 81-85 topping 85. Andrews showed good command of both his fastball and curveball, throwing his off-speed early in counts as well as a punch out pitch. Controlled athletic motions on the mound. Andrews has a long 6-foot, 165-pound frame, uses his levers well, and has easy explosive arm action. Andrews is the #1 ranked right-handed pitcher in Iowa and has proved it in his appearances so far showing his ability to stay composed and repeat mechanics while going deeper in games.

Jackson Peer (2024, Bettendorf, Iowa) continued his impressive run, tossing three perfect innings, running his fastball up to 86 and collecting seven strikeouts. Peer has been one of the most dominant pitchers of the Spring, through 7.1 innings pitched he has racked up 15 strikeouts giving up just three hits and zero walks. Peer gets downhill and out front fast making it seem like he’s delivering the ball from 54-55 feet away. He mainly works the bottom of the zone and has great command of his fastball early in this Spring. Peer brings a strong 6-foot-1, 185-pound frame to the mound and pitches from a high three-quarters arm slot. Already seems to be in midsummer form, fun player to watch.


Sam George (2023, Bettendorf, Iowa) is one of the top left-handed pitchers in the state. He showcased his skills this weekend running his fastball up to 88 giving up no hits and no earned runs. George has a tall wiry 6-foot-4, 190-pound frame. George starts with a high leg kick, sinks deep into his back hip, and delivers the ball from a lower three-quarters arm slot. Creates a ton of whip action in his hips. Firm fastball, likes to work up in the zone, delivery makes it tough on hitters. Explosive athletic movements throughout the entire process, super projectable arm. I believe George has the potential to be a very dangerous pitcher in the future and there is plenty of velocity and upside all around yet to be unlocked. Minnesota State commit.
 
Bryce Pauly (2026, Davenport, Iowa) improved on his two-way upside this weekend tossing three innings and reaching 86 sitting 80-85 and collecting six strikeouts. Pauly has an easy yet explosive delivery with big time arm speed. He also mixes in a healthy dose of off-speed pitches in any count and throws them for strikes. At the plate Pauly knocked in three runs and added a huge triple in one of his final at bats. Starts with an open stance, comes to a wide base and does a great job of getting his barrel through the zone. Pauly has plus bat speed mixed with a polished swing and is a dangerous at bat every time he steps in the box. No matter where Pauly is on the field you might mistake him to be older than just a freshman, whether it be by size or skill he stands out in his play. At 6-foot-1, 170-pounds he moves with athleticism in every aspect of his game.

Andrew Hamlett (2024, Cedar Rapids, Iowa) showed great potential in his three innings on the mound on Saturday. Hamlett was efficient in his work, pounding the zone with his fastball and throwing his breaking ball while ahead in counts to keep hitters off-balanced. Hamlett throws from the left-side and is consistent in his mechanics. He has a chest-high leg kick, stays composed through foot landing and has a high effort delivery. Has room for strength to be added and glove side work to be polished. Hamlett started the game and went three innings, sitting 79-84 topping 84. He collected five strikeouts to zero walks and one hit allowed. Hamlett is a very projectable arm and has lots of upside as he matures.

Noah Young (2023, Eldridge, Iowa) was all you could ask for out of your three-hole hitter Saturday, collecting four hits including a double and two runs batted in. Young showed great pull side power taking three of his four hits to right field. Young has an even set stance at the plate, does a great job of getting his barrel to the ball and gets a ton of backspin producing a natural lift on balls. Young carries a flaming hot streak into next week. Black Hawk College Commit.

Mason Bogan (2025, Davenport, Iowa) had a productive day despite only having one hit. He tallied up his line with five runs, two runs batted in, three walks and two stolen bases. Bogan earned what he got this weekend hustling everywhere on the field flashing his speed and glove. Bogan was able to poke one opposite field over the first baseman's head and turned it into a two RBI double. His presence stood out above everyone else on the field, showed plus speed, great top of the lineup productivity and great leadership traits. Exciting player to watch going forward.

Cooper Lindaman (2023, Brandon, Iowa) gave Iowa Select 2023 Patterson a chance during his three inning start. Lindaman starts with a belt-high leg kick before a short arm action and a three- quarter arm slot. He used the fastball, 75-80, that kept its plane well. Lindaman was able to mix in a good change-up with arm side fade, look for him to continue to develop with the change-up and keep the arm speed the same as with the fastball. He also showed a slider with some late bite. The good feel for the secondaries allowed for the fastball to be able to play well up in the zone. Lindaman is able to get weak contact and work under the barrel of opposing hitters. He was able to spread three hits and a walk into only one run allowed and collected a strikeout. He is an efficient strike thrower that lets the defense work behind him. Right-handed pitcher with good ground ball stuff. Clarke commit.

Luke Baker (2026, Dubuque, Iowa) has shown a ton of middle-of-the-order hitting potential all Spring League for the Iowa Renegades. So far this Spring League he has collected six hits, including a double and has shown good ability to hit with runners in scoring position driving in 12 runs. He has a simple toe tap on the swing and a direct hand path to the baseball with good connectivity to the lower half and intent to drive the ball. Wraps the barrel well with some flashes of barrel whip. Baker has an extra-large 6-foot-2, 225-pound frame with good power upside as the frame matures and continues to add strength. Moves well around the first base bag and projects well at that position.

Graham Ahlers (2026, Peosta, Iowa) has shown good upside in the box for the Iowa Renegades. Ahlers uses a high leg stride and good weight shift before quick hands come through with a flat bat path. Shows a good approach as a line drive hitter who is able to use the whole field. Ahlers has impressed with his consistent hard contact as he has collected six hits including a double. This Spring League he has impressed with the ability to generate offense scoring six runs and driving in another four runs as well. He has a young, thin 6-foot, 145-pound frame and shows good gap-to-gap to some power upside as the frame fills and adds more strength.
 

Anthony Harrington (2026, Lost Nation, Iowa) has shown a ton of upside with his two-way upside halfway through this spring. Harrington has been swinging a red-hot bat all spring starting 14-for-20 with four doubles and a triple. Harrington uses a low leg kick to coil up the body before good hands get the barrel to the ball. He shows top-of-the-order hitting potential driving the offense with five runs scored and driving in nine runs. Harrington has also shown good speed on the bases racking up five steals. On the mound he starts with a chest-high leg kick before a short arm action whips the arm through from a high three- quarter arm slot. He impressed during his one-hit, three inning shutout start. Harrington was able to run the fastball up to 82 and was around 78 for the outing. He also mixed in a developing curveball that he can flip into the strike zone to help him collect the four strikeouts to only two walks. Harrington has an athletic, well-put together 5-foot-11, 180-pound frame that projects well moving forward. He was named the top hitter during week two for his performance.

Barrett Moran (2024, Cedar Falls, Iowa) showed off his top-of-the-order hitting upside for Iowa Select 2024 Sass. He uses a double toe tap to load the lower half before striding out and getting the barrel through the zone. Moran has some uphill plane in the swing and shows some barrel feel. He was able to set the table well from the leadoff spot collecting two hits including a loud opposite field double down the right field line. Moran has some pop and is able to use the whole field well. He impresses with good speed for the size with a sturdy 5-foot-11, 230-pound frame.

Cooper Hummel (2025, Cascade, Iowa) showed off on the mound for Iowa Select 2025 Hummel. He starts with a belt-high leg kick before a medium arm action brings the arm around from a low three- quarter arm slot. Hummel used the fastball that was 73-77 and topped out at 78 to compete around the zone. He also mixed in a good split-fingered fastball that he was able to control well at the bottom of the zone. The mix helped him to get four strikeouts in his 2.2 innings pitched while only allowing one hit. Hummel has a nice three-pitch mix and showed some good pitchability. Strong 6-foot, 190-pound frame that can still add strength. Has flashed good two-way upside with middle-of-the-order hitting potential. In the box he collected five hits, including a double and racked up five RBI.

Kamren Francois (2025, Cedar Rapids, Iowa) has been a force at the top of the Iowa Select 2025 Schulte line-up. So far this spring he has collected seven hits in 16 at-bats and drawn four walks. Francois uses a low toe tap and good connectivity to the lower half to generate power before some bat speed is able to impact the ball to all fields. He shows good bat-to-ball skills and a good contact-oriented approach. Francois has good speed that allows him to make plays and get on base. He has also shown the ability to hit in key situations, driving in five runs while also coming around to score five runs himself as well. Defensively, Francois has also impressed with good arm strength at present and showed range from the shortstop position. He has a twitchy 5-foot-8, 154-pound frame that has plenty of room to fill.

Silas Riehl (2026, Marion, Iowa) was dominant on the mound for Iowa Select 2026 Frese. He starts with a belt-high leg kick and slight hip turn before uncoiling into a short stride from the mound and working from a three- quarters arm slot. Riehl used the fastball, 76-80 and touched 82, while mixing in a change-up with some arm side run and a good 11-5 shaped curveball with quality depth. He was able to locate all three pitches well and throw them for strikes leading him to collect five strikeouts and only allowing a walk during his four inning start. He was also able to suppress a hot-hitting offense to only four hits and an unearned run. Tall 6-foot, 185-pound frame that has plenty of room to add. High upside pitcher who’s looking to have a strong stretch to close out the Spring League.

James Perkins (2025, Cedar Rapids, Iowa) looked impressive on the mound for Iowa Select 2025 Schellhorn in his 2.2 inning appearance. Perkins starts with a slightly above the belt leg kick before striding out and working from an over-the-top arm slot. Showed a fastball that was 74-78 and was able to tunnel well with a 12-6 curveball that shows quality depth. He was able to locate the curveball well at the bottom of the zone to get weak contact or swing and miss on. The fastball also played up in the zone well with the hitter not being able to recognize which pitch was coming. The left-handed pitcher also attacked hitters well on the outer half of the plate en route to collecting four strikeouts and only allowing a single hit. Perkins has a lanky 6-foot-3, 210-pound frame that lets him get a high release point that is hard for hitters to pick up and lets him work downhill from the mound well.

Blake Davis (2027, Keokuk, Iowa) has been one of the hottest hitters all Spring League for Gamers Academy 2027. So far this Spring League Davis has collected seven hits, including three doubles and a triple. He has also impressed with above average plate discipline for the age, working six walks already without recording a single strikeout. In the box Davis looks comfortable with a long toe tap stride before getting the hips rotated with a quick swing that keeps the barrel even through the zone. His hands work directly to the baseball. Davis gets good extension with the swing and has some uphill plane in the swing that is able to produce consistent line drive contact. He has middle-of-the-order hitting potential with the ability to get on base and score runs, coming around to score 13 times already, and drive in others, recording 10 RBI. Davis has impressed all Spring League and will be a player to watch as he looks to close out an impressive Spring League season these next two weekends.

Myles Davis (2024, Marion, Iowa) continues to show off his all-around game during this Spring League. He has impressed with his feel for his strike zone working three walks in his first 12 plate appearances. Davis also shows good barrel control collecting three hits and a double. He has a small stride that works well engaging the lower half before his hands come through the zone with the barrel whipping around behind them. Davis has a direct hand path to the baseball and has shown the ability to drive the ball to all fields. With an athletic 6-foot-2, 190 pound frame, as the Spring rolls along expect to see more baseballs driven deep. He has impressed once on base with a good base running IQ, collecting five stolen bases. Creighton Tuzzio (2024, Clarinda, Iowa) took the ball in the semi-final game and was able to get on the bump and carve for his team. Tuzzio is a taller 6-foot-6, 210-pound frame with plenty to like in the operation. The right-handed pitcher has a slower and more controlled operation as he works through the delivery. He lifts the leg up around the belt and then works through a three-quarters release with good whip through it. The fastball worked up to 86 mph on the fastball and held in the low- to mid-80s. He creates some angle on it with the taller & projectable frame. It runs arm-side and can be a problem for right-handed hitters. He also showed a low-70s curveball with a bigger 11/5 tilt to it and good depth to miss some bats. James Sherry (’26, Aiken, S.C.)- the 6-foot-1, 155-pound right-handed pitcher tossed a complete game for Xtreme Xposure Baseball-Bennett in an 8-1 win over 2 Way Athletics 16U. A primary outfielder, Sherry finished with 15 strikeouts and just one walk while controlling the zone at a 65% strike rate. Patrick Kovacs (2026 Knoxville TN) was dominant in his outing in game two of pool play for Exposure National. The southpaw tossed three scoreless innings allowing two hits while striking out eight. He showed plus command of the fastball dotting it to both sides of the plate while working off the corners at times. Patrick sat 75-78 topping at 79 multiple times throughout. He mixed in a tight breaking ball with two plane movement that he had no problem mixing in any count keeping the opposing hitters off balanced in the box. Coming from a mid 3/4s slot there was some deception within the operation making it tough to pick the fastball up out of the hand. Jack Harley (2024, Mendham, NJ) put together a dominant performance at the plate in the WWBA NEQ, leading his team to a coveted Jupiter bid while also earning MVP-honors. The 6-foot-1 left-handed hitter showcased his advanced bat-to-ball skills on several occasions. He batted .643 with two doubles, a home run and six stolen bases. Harley utilizes a repeatable, synced-up stroke with clean separation into launch. He has a great feel for the barrel and creates good strength at impact to all parts of the diamond. The future Hokie recorded a hit in all six of his games and proved to be a reliable bat at the top-of-the-order for Clubhouse 2024 EvoShield. Nathan Caldwell (2026, Columbia, S.C.) looked the part in the batter’s box as the Team Elite three-hole hitter had one of the hardest hit balls of the day. There’s really impressive bat speed and the ability to create violence and rotational acceleration through contact. He missiled a single during the game and there looks like there’s going to be pretty significant impact potential long term. He’s a strong kid with good indicators and offensive tools to like. Drew Borkowski (2026, Huntley, Ill.) showed plenty to like in the arm as he got the start in game one on the day for GRB.
