Iowa Spring League Scout Notes

2020 Iowa Spring League Event Page

The temperature was not the only thing providing some serious heat during the first weekend of the Perfect Game Iowa Spring League, as multiple PG All-Americans, college commits, and high-end MLB Draft prospects took the mound at Prospect Meadows. All together, the first week of action provided a glimpse of what should be an exciting six weeks of baseball in Eastern Iowa.



A plethora of scouts were on-hand Sunday morning to see 2019 PG All-American and TCU signee Carter Baumler (2020, Grimes, Iowa). Baumler tossed two strong innings for the Iowa Sticks, locating the fastball well to both sides of the plate at 89-91 mph. Baumler repeats his entire operation well, getting good extension over the front side and finding ways to miss the barrel with the heavy fastball.

The upper-70s curveball was a good pitch on Sunday for the 6-foot-2, 195-pound righthander, showcasing sharp 11-to-5 shape and late depth through zone with potential to miss bats with frequency in the future. Baumler continues to be one of the more polished prep arms in the Midwest and it will be exciting to see the development as we approach June.



George Klassen (2020, Port Washington, Wis.) did some things well on the mound Sunday as the 2019 PG All-American tossed 1 2/3 innings in his first start of the Spring League. Klassen has a lean and athletic frame with an abundance of projection and plenty of arm speed. The Minnesota signee sat 90-92 mph Sunday, climbing to 93 on a couple of occasions and showing a more consistent command of the strike zone compared to outings past at PG events. Ranked as the No. 78 player in the 2020 class, Klassen showed developing feel for an upper-70s curveball, landing for strikes at times but lacking that sharp bite to go along with the running fastball. All in all, a solid first outing for the MLB Draft follow this weekend.



Tyler Chadwick (2020, Marshall, Wis.) settled into a groove over the course of his outing Sunday, sitting 88-90mph with the fastball and bumping a 91 and 92 on one occasion each. Chadwick still has some room to fill out the 6-foot-5, 210-pound frame, and after struggling to command the zone early on he was really able to repeat the operation well and fill up the strike zone in his second inning of work. Chadwick flashed some feel to spin a breaking ball in the upper-70s on Sunday but was best when pitching off the heavy fastball. Chadwick generates some downward plane when on time and out front and also flashes some arm-side run to miss barrels at times.



Ian Moller (2021, Dubuque, Iowa) put together some strong at-bats for the Iowa Select Black team, finishing the three-game weekend with multiple RBI and hard-hit balls. Moller is one of the more exciting prospects for the 2021 MLB Draft but already shows a mature approach and excellent bat-to-ball skills as a high school junior. At 6-foot-1, 201-pounds, Moller swings with intent to impact the ball and showcased all fields jump off the barrel throughout the weekend. The Louisiana State commit is still over a year away from his draft day but is certainly continuing to impress those in attendance with each look.

Calvin Harris (2020, Peosta, Iowa) had a quieter weekend at the plate, showing the ability to put together quality at-bats with excellent feel for the strike zone. Harris executed a pull-side approach throughout the weekend and really shined in his battle with fellow PG All-American Carter Baumler. Harris was able to jump on one of Baumler’s rare misses on Sunday, driving the ball to right field for a double. Behind the plate, Harris continues to showcase soft hands and athletic actions at the catcher position. A Mississippi commit, Harris is another player in Iowa’s loaded 2020 class to keep an eye on come June.

Jackson Payne (2020, Clive, Iowa) was lights out in his first start of the PG Iowa Spring League, attacking hitters with a fastball at 86-88mph. Payne has a long and projectable frame, getting good extension over the front side and locating the fastball well to both sides of the plate. Payne has developing feel to spin a low-70s curveball, pitching off the heater almost exclusively during this first trip to Prospect Meadows. The Iowa commit has strong command of the zone and it will exciting to see if the right-hander can make velo strides as we head towards June.

Tyler Tscherter (2020, Reinbeck, Iowa) was very impressive in his two innings of work, running the lively fastball up to 88mph and showcasing excellent command of the strike zone. The Kirkwood signee attacked hitters with a heavy dose of the fastball, flashing some big arm-side life while and tunneling the mid-70s slider well. Tscherter has plenty of room to fill out the lean and athletic frame and repeats the operation well with some serious whip in the arm from a mid, three-quarter slot. The senior puts together quality at-bats at the plate as well and could be a reliable two-way option for the Eagles in 2021.

Reece Beuter (2020, Cedar Falls, Iowa) was another Kirkwood signee to impress on the mound this weekend. Beuter came in out of the bullpen for EMB Eudaley, sitting at 85-87mph with a lively fastball and locating to the arm-side with ease. Beuter has plenty of feel to spin a mid-70s slider and generates some tilt and sharp bite through the zone when on time and out front. Beuter has been up to 90 mph in events past and has the athleticism to really project for more at the next level.

Noah Weiman (2020, Davenport, Iowa) was impressive up the middle for the Quad City A’s. Weiman has clean and consistent glove actions, playing through the ball well and making strong throws across the diamond. At the plate, Weiman has a contact-oriented approach and a direct path to contact. Still uncommitted in the 2020 class, the defensive-minded shortstop could make a welcome addition to someone at the next level.

While the upperclassmen dominated much of the excitement opening weekend, there were quite a few underclassmen that shined as well.

Ethan Patterson (2023, Washington, Iowa) is turning into an exciting follow in the freshman class, running the fastball up to 83mph before pitching in the low-80s. Patterson has an athletic frame, repeating his mechanics well and showing advanced command to the glove side. Patterson projects for more as the frame continues to mature, and the right-hander shows feel for a curveball at 68-70mph. Patterson attacked hitters with confidence and will be an exciting arm to follow throughout his high school career.

Solen Munson (2023, Asbury, Iowa) is really starting to come into his own this spring, adding some size and strength to the frame with a hit tool that is coming along nicely. Munson turned heads in the weekend’s final game, blasting a grand slam to the pull-side. The left-handed hitter is showing plenty of power potential as a freshman and will only continue to add to his power game as the frame continues to mature.

Reese Moore (2022, Forest City, Iowa) had a strong day for Iowa Select Purple on Saturday, showcasing quick hands from the left side with a mature approach and advanced bat-to-ball skills. Moore plays bigger than the 5-foot-11 frame lets on, and the sophomore can really impact the ball to the pull-side. Moore swings with intent to drive the baseball and should only continue to hit with more consistency as he continues to add size and strength.

Sam Wilt (2022, Anamosa, Iowa) has a long and projectable frame with plenty of strength in the lower half. The right-hander started a Sunday contest for Iowa Select Purple, attacking hitters with a fastball at 80-83 mpmph and locating well to the arm side. At 6-foot-2, 190-pounds, Wilt has clean and repeatable mechanics down the mound with developing arm speed. As Wilt continues to add some twitch and athleticism to the delivery the velo jumps should start to come

Creighton Tuzzio (2024, Clarinda, Iowa) took the ball in the semi-final game and was able to get on the bump and carve for his team. Tuzzio is a taller 6-foot-6, 210-pound frame with plenty to like in the operation. The right-handed pitcher has a slower and more controlled operation as he works through the delivery. He lifts the leg up around the belt and then works through a three-quarters release with good whip through it. The fastball worked up to 86 mph on the fastball and held in the low- to mid-80s. He creates some angle on it with the taller & projectable frame. It runs arm-side and can be a problem for right-handed hitters. He also showed a low-70s curveball with a bigger 11/5 tilt to it and good depth to miss some bats. James Sherry (’26, Aiken, S.C.)- the 6-foot-1, 155-pound right-handed pitcher tossed a complete game for Xtreme Xposure Baseball-Bennett in an 8-1 win over 2 Way Athletics 16U. A primary outfielder, Sherry finished with 15 strikeouts and just one walk while controlling the zone at a 65% strike rate. Appearing in only his second PG tournament, Sherry turned in another great pitching performance after being selected to the All-Tournament Team at the 2023 16U PG Southeast Labor Day Classic. Patrick Kovacs (2026 Knoxville TN) was dominant in his outing in game two of pool play for Exposure National. The southpaw tossed three scoreless innings allowing two hits while striking out eight. He showed plus command of the fastball dotting it to both sides of the plate while working off the corners at times. Patrick sat 75-78 topping at 79 multiple times throughout. He mixed in a tight breaking ball with two plane movement that he had no problem mixing in any count keeping the opposing hitters off balanced in the box. Coming from a mid 3/4s slot there was some deception within the operation making it tough to pick the fastball up out of the hand. Jack Harley (2024, Mendham, NJ) put together a dominant performance at the plate in the WWBA NEQ, leading his team to a coveted Jupiter bid while also earning MVP-honors. The 6-foot-1 left-handed hitter showcased his advanced bat-to-ball skills on several occasions. He batted .643 with two doubles, a home run and six stolen bases. Harley utilizes a repeatable, synced-up stroke with clean separation into launch. He has a great feel for the barrel and creates good strength at impact to all parts of the diamond. The future Hokie recorded a hit in all six of his games and proved to be a reliable bat at the top-of-the-order for Clubhouse 2024 EvoShield. Nathan Caldwell (2026, Columbia, S.C.) looked the part in the batter’s box as the Team Elite three-hole hitter had one of the hardest hit balls of the day. There’s really impressive bat speed and the ability to create violence and rotational acceleration through contact. He missiled a single during the game and there looks like there’s going to be pretty significant impact potential long term. He’s a strong kid with good indicators and offensive tools to like. Drew Borkowski (2026, Huntley, Ill.) showed plenty to like in the arm as he got the start in game one on the day for GRB.
