Week 4 Recap at Hitters

Week 4 of the PG Spring League was indoors due to the cold temps and snow.  Our Taylor Weber was at Hitters Baseball Academy and took in all the action both days.  Here is his report on the top performances.

Daniel Hahn (2018 - Cudahy, WI) doesn’t have the big size or present strength as some of his teammates, but what he does well is put the barrel on the ball. He collected several hits over the weekend, including a hard-hit RBI single into left field. He has a good eye at the plate and controls the barrel well, able to work the count and get a pitch he can pull.

Paul Toetz (2019 - Greendale, WI), the Indiana commit, is another player that controls the bat well. A little bit more strength than the aforementioned Hahn, he is able to drive the ball to the gaps. There’s still room to put some size on for Toetz, but he is already able to handle the bat. He is a patient hitter and waits for a pitch he can handle, as he worked several at-bats to over eight pitches.

LSU commit Ian Moller (2021 - Dubuque, IA) played well. He continues to show why he is ranked among the best in his class across the nation. He is solid behind the dish and as he matures he will become a very good defender. He can also swing the bat well. Mohler has a lot of strength for a ’21 grad but still have room to add. He gets some natural lift to swing and almost always puts the ball on a line. He drove in several runs on a couple line drives up the middle but is capable of using the whole field.

The first guy on the mound for Hitters was 6-foot-8 right hander Parker Heidorf (2018 - Waukesha, WI). Heidorf has good size and his delivery is clean and easily repeated. He has a long arm action, releasing from a three-quarters arm slot. He fills the zone with a fastball that topped at 85 MPH with some run to it. His size and clean delivery makes it seem that he has the chance to increase that velocity. He also showed a curveball with some deception on late two-plane movements in the low 70s.

Another righty in Sean O’Brien (2018 - Pewaukee, WI) took the mound on day two for the Hitters. O’Brien was up to 86 MPH on his fastball and flashed a good curveball in the low 70s. He really knows how to pitch and was able to command both pitches, especially the fastball to both sides of the plate. He’s aggressive and goes after hitters early in the count. O’Brien generated some swing and miss and got a lot of weak contact in the game.

The Bradley commit Eli Campbell (2018 - Cudahy, WI) was strong in his outing as well. He got stronger every inning and found the command of his slider after the first couple of batters he faced. He has good balance in his delivery and shows some confidence in his stuff. His fastball reached 90 MPH with some good plane through the zone. Campbell got stronger throughout his outing as he struck out five of six batters in his third and fourth innings.

Alex Binelas (2018 - camOak Creek, WI), the Louisville commit, continues to impress at the plate. He has a lot of pop in his bat and by generating some leverage in his swing he is able to drive the ball when squared. He can use his power at all parts of the fields as well, as his hardest hit ball of the weekend was to right center field.

To close out on the mound for Hitters was a fellow Louisville commit in 2020 grad AJ Vukovich (2020 - Mukwonago, WI). AJ is a solid athlete as does a lot of things well. He is a solid hitter at the plate, and this weekend he showed some promise on the mound as well. Vukovich worked just one inning and it was a quick one. He got his fastball up to 90 MPH and dropped a curveball in at 74 MPH.

There were a lot of solid right handers that took the mound for Iowa Select over the weekend and they all had some success. Arizona State commit Connor Van Scoyoc (2018 - Cedar Rapids, IA) was up to 93 MPH this weekend and sat 90 to 91 all game. He has a good knowledge on the mound, mixing well and getting on top of hitters early. He commands his fastball well to both sides and down around the knees. His changeup in the low 80s showed some sinking fade and he threw a good slider with good lateral movement in the mid 70s.

Clayton Nettleton (2018 - Davenport, IA), the Iowa commit, also brought his three-pitch arsenal. His fastball got up to 91 MPH with some good run. He also commands well and can get a lot of swing and miss. His changeup was a good secondary pitch keeping hitters off balance. He also threw a slider in the low to mid 70s. Nettleton threw very well and only allowed one hit in three innings.

Nic McCay (2018 - Carlisle, IA), a South Dakota State commit, closed out the game for the Iowa Select team with a heavy dose of fastballs at 88 to 90 MPH and topped at 91. He threw a tight curveball in the low 70s, and cruised to a strong finish to the weekend.

The top ranked player in Iowa and Kirkwood commit, Levi Usher (2018 - Fairfax, IA), bounced back from a tough day one and really hit the ball hard on day two. He collected several hits including a single down the left field line, a double to right center field and a line drive up the middle. He showed his ability to hit the ball to every part of the field.

Another of the top ranked position players in the state is Brayden Frazier (2018 - Cedar Rapids, IA), the Iowa commit. He arguably had the best weekend at the plate among all the players in attendance. He hit the ball hard every chance he got, and the results were there. He collected several hits to all parts of the field during the weekend.

Trevor Burkhart (2018 - Davenport, IA), a Parkland commit, showed good switch hit ability as he was able to acquire several hits from both sides of the plate. He can hit the ball from gap to gap no matter which side of the plate he’s on and is able to drive the ball with authority when barreling the ball out front.

Calvin Harris (2020 - Peosta, IA) an Ole Miss commit, showed some solid two-way potential as he handled the bat well this weekend. He’s got a lot of raw strength as a 2020 commit and he hits the ball hard with consistency. He also got on the mound and had a really good fastball. He locates well and got it up to 88 MPH. He shows both a slider and a curveball with command of both.

Sam Goodman (2019 - Dubuque, IA), a Wichita State commit, had another good week for the Iowa Select 2019 team. He collected couple of hits with a quick bat on day one and started the game on day two. Goodman got up to 87 MPH with his fastball and showed a solid curveball in the low 70s.

One of several South Dakota State commits this weekend was Garret Ries (2019 - Robins, IA). Ries is a solid hitter with a lot of strength to work with. He swings the bat hard and has a lot of bat speed. He makes loud contact and drives the ball hard when squared.

One of the better lefties at the event was Zachary Bierman (2019 - Dubuque, IA). He delivers the ball from a clean release and gets the fastball up there at 87 MPH with some run to it. He dropped an offspeed pitch in the low 70s with pretty good command.

DJ Heck (2019 - Iowa City, IA) had a solid weekend at the plate. He’s got some strength with room to build up even more, and he really looks to drive the ball. He can hit to all fields with power and makes a lot of good contact. He works the counts well and drives his pitch. Heck had several hits on both days.

Clayton Hromidko (2019 - Ely, IA) started a little rocky on the mound but once he found his release he was much more consistent and hard to square up. He ran his fastball up at 87 MPH and used a tight 11-to-5 curveball in the low 70s. He has good arm speed and the ball comes out of his hand cleanly.

Jakob Gast (2019 - Westallis, WI) of the Hitters had possibly the hardest hit balls among the 2019 grads all weekend. Time and time again he came to the plate and made some loud, hard contact and drove the ball. He had several extra base hits that he was able to stay back on and drive to the opposite field.

The Hitters used a solid lefty in Andrew Biertzer (2019 - West Bend, WI). He struggled while warming up to find the zone, but once the batter was in the box he was locked in. He threw a lot of strikes with the fastball at 85 MPH that got downhill plane through the zone. Biertzer really strides out and gets good extension towards the plate. He has good arm speed and his fastball gets on the hitters quickly.

Brandon Tyler (2019 - Hammond, IN) was another solid pitcher for Hitters. He utilizes a quick arm and a smooth delivery to throw the fastball with command to both sides at 86 MPH. He threw well and misses a lot of bats.

Julio Cajigas (2019 - Romeoville, IL) showed a strong ability to be a successful hitter from both sides of the plate. Cajigas has some present strength and gets natural lift through contact. He looks to pull the ball from both sides of the plate as he collected hits to left field from the right side and to right field from the left side. He hits consistent hard line drives.

Probably the best showing of hit tools among the younger players was Minnesota commit Steve Jarmroziak (2019 - Muskego, WI). He has a lot of strength in his lower half and utilizes it well. He has the ability to drive the ball from gap to gap with good authority. He got a couple of doubles both to left center and right center field.

Joey Oakie (‘24, Ankeny, IA) touching 94 early this morning sitting 90-92. Oakie collected 4 K’s through 3 IP. Explosive arm and gets good ride on his fastball. Also flashed a good slider for strikes. Oakie went on to throw three innings collecting four strikeouts, no base on balls, and one earned run. Oakie also adds a wicked slider that dips all the way down to 76 mph, keeping hitters honest. He has elite separation in his upper body and creates a ton of whip with explosive arm speed. Oakie was working the whole zone this weekend and showed some cut on his fastball as well. Creighton Tuzzio (2024, Clarinda, Iowa) took the ball in the semi-final game and was able to get on the bump and carve for his team. Tuzzio is a taller 6-foot-6, 210-pound frame with plenty to like in the operation. The right-handed pitcher has a slower and more controlled operation as he works through the delivery. He lifts the leg up around the belt and then works through a three-quarters release with good whip through it. The fastball worked up to 86 mph on the fastball and held in the low- to mid-80s. He creates some angle on it with the taller & projectable frame. It runs arm-side and can be a problem for right-handed hitters. He also showed a low-70s curveball with a bigger 11/5 tilt to it and good depth to miss some bats. The Iowa Western commit threw 5.0 innings, allowing just 1 run, with 4 walks and 6 strikeouts to his credit.   There’s no surprise here, but...

Flores has a great feel for the zone and pounded strikes at a 66% rate. Flores generated swing and miss after swing and miss and it was clear he was in control out there on the mound. James Sherry (’26, Aiken, S.C.)- the 6-foot-1, 155-pound right-handed pitcher tossed a complete game for Xtreme Xposure Baseball-Bennett in an 8-1 win over 2 Way Athletics 16U. A primary outfielder, Sherry finished with 15 strikeouts and just one walk while controlling the zone at a 65% strike rate. Appearing in only his second PG tournament, Sherry turned in another great pitching performance after being selected to the All-Tournament Team at the 2023 16U PG Southeast Labor Day Classic. Patrick Kovacs (2026 Knoxville TN) was dominant in his outing in game two of pool play for Exposure National. The southpaw tossed three scoreless innings allowing two hits while striking out eight. He showed plus command of the fastball dotting it to both sides of the plate while working off the corners at times. Patrick sat 75-78 topping at 79 multiple times throughout. He mixed in a tight breaking ball with two plane movement that he had no problem mixing in any count keeping the opposing hitters off balanced in the box. Coming from a mid 3/4s slot there was some deception within the operation making it tough to pick the fastball up out of the hand. The frame has plenty of athleticism within with plenty of more room for additional strength as he continues to mature. Kovacs should be a fun follow as he continues to progress through high school. Jack Harley (2024, Mendham, NJ) put together a dominant performance at the plate in the WWBA NEQ, leading his team to a coveted Jupiter bid while also earning MVP-honors. The 6-foot-1 left-handed hitter showcased his advanced bat-to-ball skills on several occasions. He batted .643 with two doubles, a home run and six stolen bases. Harley utilizes a repeatable, synced-up stroke with clean separation into launch. He has a great feel for the barrel and creates good strength at impact to all parts of the diamond. The future Hokie recorded a hit in all six of his games and proved to be a reliable bat at the top-of-the-order for Clubhouse 2024 EvoShield. Nathan Caldwell (2026, Columbia, S.C.) looked the part in the batter’s box as the Team Elite three-hole hitter had one of the hardest hit balls of the day. There’s really impressive bat speed and the ability to create violence and rotational acceleration through contact. He missiled a single during the game and there looks like there’s going to be pretty significant impact potential long term. He’s a strong kid with good indicators and offensive tools to like. Drew Borkowski (2026, Huntley, Ill.) showed plenty to like in the arm as he got the start in game one on the day for GRB. At 6-foot-1, 170-pounds he’s got a lanky frame with long limbs and plenty of room for physical projection.
