LATEST PG SHOWCASE REPORT
2006 National Showcase
Blake Beavan is a 2007 right hand pitcher from Irving HS, residing in Irving, TX. He has a long, lean, athletic build on his 6'7" 210 lb. frame. Beavan threw well at PG National, further cementing his status among the nation's elite '07 prep hurlers. He was ranked #8 among PG National Top 85 pitchers. He pitches from a low 3/4 slot and has a very quick, loose, and easy arm. It is a bit of a different arm stroke, making a very quick circle on the back side. Beavan creates simple and good rhythm in his delivery, has a short stride and creates good down angle with his stuff. His fastball topped at 94, which he hit repeatedly and sat in the 93-94 range. There is a lot of arm side live and at times sink with his fastball, which can push a right hand hitter off the plate and get a left hand hitter reaching. As good as his fastball is, Beavan's slider is his best pitch. It is a lateral, laredo type slide that has big and late darting action. He can use that pitch as a put away pitch or can steal strikes with it. With his fastball that moves to the arm side and the 80-83 mph slider that moves the opposite direction, Beavan really never has to come into the middle of the zone. All his stuff explodes down in the zone, even his 85 mph change-up. He is tall and athletic, and does a nice job of repeating his delivery. It actually looks like he will be able to add more velocity, both from physical strength gains as well as learning to incorporate more of his lower body in his delivery. Beavan is clearly one of the top D1 prospects in the nation and will earn very early round consideration come next June.
