Daniel Elorriaga-Matra is a 2007 right hand hitting catcher from Stoneman Douglas HS, residing in Coral Springs, FL. Matra has a strong, well-proportioned and well-developed build on his 6'0" 180 lb. frame. One of the premier catch/throw catchers in the '07 high school draft class, Matra continued to impress at PG National and was ranked #54 among PG National Top 100 position players. There are times when his bat looks like he is very close to becoming a middle of the order type hitter. He hits from a slightly open stance and has a very nice swing plane, and generally, a very nice looking swing. Matra seems to be hitting for more power now, swinging a bit harder and a bit longer. He has good bat speed and on the days when his timing is on, he is a threat with the bat. He does swing pretty hard, but keeps his balance and keeps a good hand path, working to get inside the ball most of the time. Stay with him, that bat is coming around and as for his defense, there are few better, if any. It really is enough to say that Matra's cath/throw abilities, exchange, receiving, blocking, controlling balls in the dirt, and agility are all pluses. He has a strong arm and is an efficient thrower, with little to no wasted movement. He is accurate and routinely is sub 2.0 to second base. There really is not much he cannot do behind the plate, physically speaking. Matra is also a good athlete, running 4.45 home/1st and posting a laser timed 6.83 60 yard dash. He is a top tier D1 prospect and should garner plenty of attention for the draft. He probably needs the time in college to continue to develop the bat and if he does what he looks capable of, look for him to be a very high pick out of college.
