2005 Spring Top Prospect
Johnson is a senior right handed pitcher from Wisconsin. He’s listed at 6-1, 200 but looks taller and is plenty strong. Johnson throws from a somewhat frentic, herky jerky delivery that provides plenty of deception to hitters but raises some balance and consistency issues, too. Johnson seems comfortable with it, though, as his ability to throw strikes and his stuff was very consistent. Another thing Johnson does in addition to his unusual delivery is he works very, very quickly; he basically takes the throw from the catcher astride the rubber, steps on and throws it back. Johnson’s fastball was mostly 80-81 mph in Cedar Rapids. His best pitch was a sharp biting curveball that he threw from 66-71 mph, with the best action coming on the higher velocity pitches. Johnson also picked up a strikeout on a nice change up and could use this pitch more often. Johnson also played some first base and showed nice soft hands around the bag. He shows some strength with the bat with good loading action and some loft in his swing. Johnson is a very good student.
