2005 Academic Showcase
Sweeney is a solidly built 6-3, 205 lb senior left handed pitcher from Indiana. He throws from a slow, deliberate delivery with a slow arm circle and pause in the back of his takeaway. Sweeney keeps his head on plane well and maintains good direction to the plate. He had good command of his pitches and even had a 3-pitch inning at the showcase. Sweeney’s fastball was 76-78 mph and pretty straight for a left hander. His 65-66 mph curveball had good spin and 2-plane bite most of the time and should develop into a solid pitch for him. Sweeney also played some first base when not pitching and showed good defensive actions. He’s a pull hitter who will show some bat speed and power on pitches on the inside half of the plate. Sweeney is an excellent student.
