Matthew Sergey is a 2007 RHP/1B from South Plantation HS in Plantation, FL, with a 6'3'', 160 lb. frame that's lanky and slender and very projectable. He throws from a full windup with a long arm action and a very loose, tension free arm stroke and a 3/4's arm slot. He has very good arm speed. Sergey lands a bit closed and has some medium effort on his release but repeats his delivery well and stays balanced. Sergey threw both a 4-seam and 2-seam fastball. His 4 seamer was 85-86 mph and had explosive life at the plate and overmatched hitters consistently. His 2 seamer was more in the low 80's and had very nice running and sinking life. Sergey threw both pitches for strikes and attacked hitters aggressively. His breaking ball was a 72 mph and varied between a slider and 11/5 curveball break. It had tight spin and sharp breaking action consistently and Sergey threw it for strikes consistently. Sergey did everything you want to see in a young, projectable pitcher; throw hard with life, spin the ball, repeat his delivery, aggressively throw strikes. He's a very nice young pitching prospect with a high ceiling and needs to be followed closely. He is also a good student.
