J. Ryan Rennspies is a 2008 C/3B with a 6'0'', 180 lb. frame from Cantonment FL, who attends Tate HS. He has an athletic build with plenty of room to get stronger. Rennspies has a good combination of hitting and defensive skills for a young catcher and his hitting looks to be a bit ahead of his defense at this point. He has a very sound fundamental swing with a simple, balanced approach and plus quickness in his hands and in his hips. Rennspies stays behind the ball and hits it deep in the strike zone while still being quick enough to pull the ball. He's showing signs of developing power now, which should continue. His approach is very well suited for wood bats. Defensively, Rennspies present strength is in his athleticism in blocking and receiving the ball. He was able to put up a solid pop time despite throwing mechanics that could use plenty of work. When he doesn't pop up to throw and compacts his arm action, Rennspies will be throwing 1.8's consistently. He has plenty of arm strength and that will improve with the better mechanics as well. Overall, Rennspies is an excellent 2008 catching prospect who should be followed very carefully.
