Matthew Tomshaw is a 2007 left hand pitcher from Kingston HS, residing in Kingston, NY. He has a strong, compact, durable type 6'1" 180 lb. frame. Tomshaw can pitch. He may not have as much upside projection as some other pitchers as PG National but he is presently good and what he can do well now is what he will do well in the future. Tomshaw was ranked #75 among PG National Top 85 pitchers because of his ability to pitch, versus many of the Top 85 earning their spot based upon either raw arm strength or projectability or both. He pitches from an over the top slot and has a clean arm action that starts with a short circle on the backside. Tomshaw has a pretty loose arm and has a low effort, simple delivery that he can repeat. There really is not much that can go wrong with Tomshaw's delivery. His fastball was 84-87 mph with a touch at 88. Tomshaw has good fastball command and can pitch with it. He has sneaky velocity and plus arm side movement. His best pitch is his 68-71 mph curveball, which as tight spin and late depth. Tomshaw showed that he can throw his curveball for strikes at any time, including being able to use it for outs. His 77-78 mph change-up comes out of his hand very easily, with good feel. Even more impressive was that Tomshaw used his change-up in left on left situations. His three pitch mix is about as good as any left in the '07 high school class. The obvious question is going to be how much velocity will he gain, given his body type. If he can gain velocity without upping his effort, then all of his pitches will benefit. Tomshaw is an impact D1 prospect, but will also get area scout coverage this spring. If he starts pitching in the 86-88 range and adds a few mph to his curveball too, then he may get a whole lot more pro attention.
