2004 Midwest Top Prospect Showcase
Bobby Simmons is a 2006 third baseman who appears heavier and stronger than his listed 165 lbs. He is an aggressive player who we’ve seen frequently in the past. Simmons hits out of a wide stance with a pronounced bat wrap and a level, hard swing. Simmons' bat speed is good and he makes solid contact when he gets his arms extended. Defensively, Simmons shows good arm strength, soft hands especially to the backhand, and some nice body control. His feet could be a bit quicker. Simmons also showed some promise on the mound. He throws with some effort and flies open early with his front shoulder and spins off, but his stuff was good. Simmons' fastball was 82-84 mph with some sinking and tailing action, and his 64-66 mph curveball had some depth to it. Better mechanics might make him a serious pitching prospect and he should keep this option open in the future. Bobby is a very good player and very good student.
