2004 Spring Top Prospect Showcase
OF-C Steve Daniels: Daniels is a junior left handed hitting outfielder from Wisconsin who also catches. This young prospect is an excellent athlete with some good baseball skills that are going to keep getting better. Daniels turned in the fastest 60 time at the Showcase at 6.60 and was in the 4.1’s down to first base every time despite not having a quick exit from the box. He can really accelerate! Daniels showed us very good arm strength from the outfield and will cover plenty of ground in centerfield. Although it’s a long shot, his catching ability is intriguing. There aren’t many left handed hitting catchers and Daniels has the basic tools and enthusiasm level to do well at the position. He’s a bit raw now on his receiving skills but his pop times were under 2.00. He could provide his coaches at the next level with some line up options. Offensively, Daniels hits out of a very wide stance. We suspect that a well meaning coach spread him out and encouraged him to make spray contact all over the field and take advantage of his speed. Daniels does that very well and had three hits during the games, all followed by steals of second. But Daniels has some bat speed and projectable strength and getting him taller and more leveraged in the batters box will turn those single/SB at bats into some double and triple up the alley at bats. Daniels is a definite quality Division I prospect whose speed and tools should get him attention from the professional scouts as well. We also liked his attitude towards the game and his hustle.
