LATEST PG SHOWCASE REPORT
2006 National Showcase
Sean Hoelscher is a 2007 right hand hitting 3rd baseman/pitcher from Calallen HS, residing in Robstown, TX. He has a strong and athletic build on his very projectable a 6'3" 200 lb. frame that has plenty of room to fill out. Hoelscher was ranked #44 among PG National Top 100 position players but also performed well enough on the mound to be ranked in the top half of the Top 85 pitchers, making him one of the top two-way players at the event, if not the nation. At the plate Hoelscher hits from a square stance with a pigeon toed set-up. From that starting position he closed off a bit during his stride. His hands wrapped a bit during his load but through all of that, his hands showed very good life as a hitter. He make a lot of hard opposite field contact. With good present day bat speed, lively hands, and plenty of future weight and strength gains, Hoelscher has a chance to develop into an offensive force. In the outfield he showed plus raw arm strength with a sling type arm action. That arm slot created some inconsistent accuracy with his throws. Hoelscher showed good enough hands for the hot corner. It was on the mound that he showed the most intriguing ability. Hoelscher pitchers from a high 3/4 slot, with a long and quick arm action. He has good rhythm in his delivery and moved down the slope well, maintaining good body control throughout his delivery. His 88-90 mph fastball came out of Hoelscher's hand easily and had plus sink and at times, hard bore action. It was a bat breaking fastball. His 77-81 mph had plus spin and excellent two plane shape, not to mention that he showed the ability to throw it for strikes. It would have been impressive enough with that description but Hoelscher's slider is an out pitch, as is his fastball. To boot, he has a 76 mph change-up he is developing. That fastball/slider combination is outstanding and is going to continue to develop into plus stuff. Hoelscher ran 4.70 home/1st and posted a 7.21 60 yard dash. He does have a chance to develop as a position player, but the feeling here is that his future is on the mound and it is a very bright future, one that could start next June.
