Roddy Fields is a big and country strong 6'1", 2006 catcher from Tampa, Florida, that we also saw earlier in the summer. While Fields is plenty strong now, he still has room to improve his overall body as he continues to mature. Fields showed very good arm strength behind the plate, reaching 79 mph on his throws during workouts. A big hand hitch in his release cost him time on his pops, though. A big hand hitch also is a major factor in Fields’ performance at the plate. He hits from a medium stance with a no stride approach, and has a big hand hitch that he never gets back up to hitting position. Fields' swing ends up as a severe upper cut that isn’t on the plane of the ball for very long. Fields has the strength and athletic ability to be a good hitter, but this approach just isn’t going to work for him that we can see. We’d like to see him again after he’s made some adjustments, especially with the bat, as there is potential here that Fields isn’t showing. Fields is an off the top of the charts student who should get attention from elite academic universities.
