2005 Midwest Top Prospect Showcase
Nicholas Kurash is a 6-0, 170 lb senior right handed pitcher from Illinois with a very quick and strong arm. Although he still has room for improvement, Kurash has really cleaned up his delivery during the past year, which enables him to use his natural talent better. He throws from a tall, on-line delivery and a high 3/4's to overhand release point that creates good downward plane to the plate. Kurash's fastball was 86-88 mph at the showcase and we've seen him in the low 90's in the past. His 77 mph slider was very sharp and tight and is his best secondary pitch. His 69 mph curveball was looser and more of a show pitch/change of pace. Kurash's 78 mph change up was a quality pitch with lots of deception and he should use it more often. Kurash is an aggressive pitcher who likes to challenge hitters with his fastball early in the count. When he's throwing the ball down in the strike zone he's very difficult to get good swings off of. Very good prospect. Good student.
