2006 National Showcase
Matt Sorrell is a 2007 right hand hitting 3rd baseman from Sea Breeze HS, residing in Ormond Beach, FL. He is quite physically built and has an excellent 6'3" 200 lb. frame that is both presently strong but also has room to fill out. There were times when Sorrell showed very intriguing abilities and enough times that he looked like the developing player that he is. Ultimately he was ranked #98 among PG National Top 100 position players and it would be a good bet that in the future, when ranking all these players again, he would be higher. Sorrell hits from a square stance with a bit of a wrap load that creates some swing length. He is a timing type hitter, as many power hitters are. In time Sorrell should develop into a power hitting 3rd baseman if his many positive attributes are an indication of his future. His barrel stays in the zone pretty well, he showed good bat speed and when a mistake entered the zone, he jumped on it. Long term he looks to be an RBI type of hitter, a solid 5-6 hole type. Follow him closely, he could explode in the springtime. Defensively he has a full set of tools that profile well at 3rd base. Sorrell has a strong average arm and good hands. He moves well and showed good some lateral agility. His bat and defensive skills all make him a pretty close to prototypical 3rd base prospect. Sorrel ran home/1st and posted a 7.05 60 yard dash. Look for him to be a sought after D1 recruit and also get plenty of attention from his area scouts this spring. Big young corner players with playable skills across the board are not that common.
