2004 Spring Top Prospect Showcase
IF Matt Dunaway: Dunaway, a senior middle infielder who has signed with LaSalle, had impressed us earlier in the year when we saw him and he came all the way across from New Jersey to impress us again. He has an above average combination of speed and strength in a young athlete. Dunaway has very good first step quickness and ran 6.65 in the 60 at the start of the Showcase. He moves side to side well on defense, also. Dunaway also has some pop in his bat, generating nice bat speed and even driving a ball over the centerfielder’s head at one point in the Showcase. With his extra base power and speed, he’s going to be a multi-dimensional offensive threat in college. What position Dunaway eventually ends up at we’re not sure. His speed and solid arm strength plays well at all three middle of the field positions. Dunaway’s actions at shortstop are a bit raw, especially in his hand position fielding the ball, but he has plenty of time to learn. Another thing we like about this prospect is that he is a big time hustler. He loves to play the game and he plays it the right way. He has a chance to be an overachiever and with his already very good tools, that’s a promising combination.
