Matt Baker is a 2005 from Boynton Beach, FL. He is a right handed pitcher with a nice projectable body and good arm strength. A multitude of mechanical problems in his delivery are keeping him from reaching his potential now but he has the chance to make significant improvement in the future. Baker’s fastball was in the 79-82 mph range with some occasional arm side movement. His best secondary pitch was a deceptive 69 mph change up and he rarely threw a breaking ball. Baker’s mechanical problems originate from a very long and involved windup and long arm stroke. He flies open before release and falls hard off to the first base side, thus the lack of an effective breaking ball. Shorten and simplify everything and Baker might be a consistent mid-80’s guy in a short time. He needs to be followed.
