2004 National Underclass Dec 28-30
Mata is a junior catcher with a medium build and some present strength, especially in his lower half. He threw a good 74 mph from behind the plate with a low pop time of 2.19. Mata’s best catching tool were his feet, which were pretty quick and enabled him to do a good job blocking pitches. Mata hits from quiet stance with high hands and limited load and weight shift. His strong hands enable him to generate some bat speed with a short, line drive type of swing. Mata also pitched an inning of relief, throwing 77-78 from a submarine release point and getting nasty running action into right hand hitter’s hands. He also had good command of a sweeping 66 mph curveball and didn’t look like he’d be much fun to hit off of. Mata is a very good student.
