2005 Atlantic Coast Top Prospect Showcase
Jeffress is a very athletic 6-1, 180 lb right handed pitcher from Virginia. He's an AFLAC All-American who is one of the top ranked players in the 2006 class and a possible high pick in next June's draft. Jeffress was "discovered" at last year's Atlantic Coast Underclass Showcase and it's been a whirlwind past 12 months for him. He came out to UNC to throw what amounted to a bullpen for him. He threw 2 innings and threw 87-90 with easy action and little effort. Jeffress has been up to 97-98 mph this summer. His pitching mechanics have really come together nicely. Jeffress' delivery bears much resemblance to a young Dwight Gooden's, with the high balanced leg kick and the full arm stroke coming through. Jeffress also showed tight spin on a 74-76 mph curveball, although not of Gooden-esque sharpness. Jeffress also took a few at bats and showed why he would be considered a top centerfield prospect if he weren't a pitcher, showing plus bat speed and tons of natural athleticism.
