2003 Indoor Showcase
Kapala is a 6 foot 5 right-hander with a beautiful, but somewhat unusual arm action and plus life on his fastball. He has a lean and projectable 200 pound body with long arms and fluid mechanics. He pitched at the indoor showcase with only a couple bullpens under his belt, at this point in the year, due to a busy basketball schedule. He looked like he was in mid-season form. He had 89-93 mph velocity and touched 95 on his first pitch of the inning before even facing a live batter, in his warm-up throw on the game mound. He comes from a very low 3/4 arm slot and it creates a lot of movement on his fastball and change-up. His change-up was clocked between 78-81mph and it ran down and in on right-handed batters. He also showed a 76-78 mph slider that touched 80 and looked sharp with a good spin starting out behind the batter and ending up a called strike. It is a potent attack that will surely draw early draft consideration, especially since he is not yet in throwing shape. Kapala has signed with Notre Dame, but this Spring if he throws like we seen him in the indoor, he could be in pro ball this summer and with a large bank account..
