Mason Eng is a 2018 C/MIF with a 5-7 158 lb. frame from San Jose, CA who attends Bellarmine College Prep. Compact frame with a lean, athletic build. Projects for additional size and strength. Ran a 7.47 sixty yard dash. Primary catcher with a low set and good hip flexion while setting up to receive. Gains some grounds towards the bag with quick, fundamental footwork while working out of crouch. Compact, quick exchanges while working through transition and keeps hips in line at release. Topped at 74 miles per hour with stiff on line carry to the bag, best workout pop time of 1.93. Also worked out defensively from the outfield and infield. From the outfield shows fundamental footwork while closing to the baseball. Clean glove actions while working through baseball and gets baseball out quickly with smooth exchanges. Created uphill carry to the bag while topping at 80 miles per hour. From the infield shows solid range to each side with athletic glove actions while funneling out front. Gets the baseball out quickly from the infield as well generating good carry to the bag, topped at 76 miles per hour. Right handed hitter with a straight, upright stance. Generates solid shift into contact with linear lower half actions. Loose, extended line drive path with occasional leverage through extension. Swings with intent to drive the baseball through the gaps. Developing feel for the barrel, flashed good bat speed and strength when front side trigger arrived on time and maintained balanced. Outstanding student. Named to the 2016 Cal Underclass Top Prospect List.
