2005 Sunshine West Showcase
Steven Winnick is a 2006 RHP/SS from Horizon HS in San Diego, CA, with a 6'1", 185 lb. frame. Winnick was named to the Top Prospect Team at the event, and showed well on the mound and at the plate. He is a strong bodied player with broad shoulders and strong legs. He throws from a 3/4 arm slot with good arm speed that helps produce a fastball that topped out at 85 mph. Winnick gets good life on his fastball, and mixes in a sharp breaking slider at 75 mph with late downward action along with a knuckleball at 69 mph. He finishes his pitches well and has very good control with projectable velocity. At the plate he is a right handed hitter with good bat speed and present raw power. His swing is compact and he shows good rhythm with a good weight shift and a balanced swing. He hit several balls hard in batting practice and the showcase games. Winnick also has very good speed running a 7.08-sixty on a slow track. That foot speed helps him defensively as well. He has good actions with enough arm strength to play the left side of the infield. Winnick is a two-way prospect that needs to be followed closely. He is also an outstanding student.
