Champs Crowned at North Atlanta Open

ATLANTA, Ga. -- The 17u North Atlanta Open crowned co-champions on Sunday afternoon at Perfect Game’s East Cobb Baseball Complex, after the two finalists, East Cobb Astros 17u and East Cobb Astros 16u Texas Orange, got together and made the decision to share the title.

Despite the absence of the division’s championship, all four semifinalist teams produced high-quality games that were highlighted by several momentum-shifting plays, that ultimately gave both Astros teams victories.

The 16u Astros, who were undefeated entering their semifinal matchup with 643 DP Jaguars 17u Beasley, had posted a +23 run differential in their previous three games, second only to their program’s 17u affiliate. They finished the game with a 6-3 win.

The scoring began early, when 643 jumped out to an early two-run advantage in the top of the first inning, taking advantage of several East Cobb fielding miscues, but that lead was largely ephemeral.

In the next half inning, the Astros loaded the bases on three straight singles, and pushed across a total of four runs after also drawing three total walks in the inning. East Cobb tacked on an additional insurance run in the second, giving the game a 5-2 score in favor of the Astros.

Luke Orfi started and went 4 2/3 innings for East Cobb, allowing only one hit, while striking out three in an outing that paired an 85 mph fastball and a 74 mph breaking ball. In addition to his efforts on the mound, Orfi also drove in three runs during the game.

Georgia Tech commit John Cooper Williams and Boston Forbes individually tallied one RBI, helping to secure the 6-3 victory.

East Cobb Texas Orange’s Michael Mullinax, a 2024 grad, was named the MVP of the 17u division, as he drove in seven runs and scored five more, including a home run. Tate McKee earned MV-Pitcher honors for his performance on the mound against Team Revolution, as he struck out 14 over five innings of work while only allowing one hit.

In the day’s other semifinal, The 17u Astros also entered play with an eye-catching +33 run differential, and a roster featuring a swath of college commits. In a game that was played fairly closely through three innings, East Cobb eventually outlasted 643 DP Cougars Pedraza in the later innings, prevailing 11-5.

Through two innings, 643 created a commanding 5-1 lead after tallying seven hits against the Astros’ second pitcher of the day, Carter Davies, whose fastball ranged from 83-85 mph.

However, in the fourth inning the Astros broke their seeming scoring drought and put up five runs in the innings, that at the time gave East Cobb a slim one-run lead. Highlighting the inning was a three-run home run from Casual Kay that flew over the right field wall, tying the game at five.

That fourth inning momentum, stemming from Kay’s blast, extended throughout the East Cobb bench, and after a two-out single from Vanderbilt commit RJ Austin, the Astros plated two more runs that expanded their lead to 6-5 exiting the fourth.

643 was unable to mount an effective comeback attempt, as Austin, the Astros closing pitcher in the game, backed up his offensive performance with an 89 mph fastball that powered him to two scoreless innings and two strikeouts.

East Cobb added three more insurance runs in the sixth, effectively putting the game out of reach for the Cougars.

Three runs in the top of the first inning, two in the second, and one more in each of the next two innings was plenty to earn 643 DP Cougars 17u Praigo a title at the North Atlanta Open on Sunday, winning by a final score of 8-3 over the East Cobb Astros 17u.

Tournament MVP Jake Streeter started the scoring in the top of the first for 643 with a single, scoring Joshua Katz, who doubled earlier in the inning. Cole Turner followed Streeter with a single of his own, scoring two more.

Streeter hit .571 for the tournament with four runs, two RBI, and five stolen bases.

John Armstrong, an Auburn commit, was dominant in closing out the championship on the mound, striking out six in 2 1/3 innings, not allowing a hit or walk in that time.

East Cobb Astros 17u’s Jack Butler was named the MV-Pitcher of the tournament after his six-innning shutout performance in the semifinal round of the tournament.

A competitive 16u bracket melted down to three-seed East Cobb Prime 16u and four-seed 643 DP Tigers 16u Hawkins meeting in the championship game, with East Cobb erasing a five-run deficit late in the contest to earn a 7-5 win in extra innings.

643 scored two runs in the first and one run in each of the third, fourth, and fifth innings to jump out to a five-run lead, but a run for East Cobb in the bottom of the sixth got them on the board, four more in the bottom of the seventh tied the game, and two more in the eighth walked them off with a title.

Tournament MVP Kolby Kimberly closed out the win on the mound, tossing the final 3 2/3 innings and not allowing a run. He added two hits, two runs, two RBI, and two walks in the championship game at the plate to complete his immense impact.

Dylan McCarthy was named the MV-Pitcher of the event, tossing seven innings across two outings while not allowing an earned run and striking out seven, giving up just two hits.

Creighton Tuzzio (2024, Clarinda, Iowa) took the ball in the semi-final game and was able to get on the bump and carve for his team. Tuzzio is a taller 6-foot-6, 210-pound frame with plenty to like in the operation. The right-handed pitcher has a slower and more controlled operation as he works through the delivery. He lifts the leg up around the belt and then works through a three-quarters release with good whip through it. The fastball worked up to 86 mph on the fastball and held in the low- to mid-80s. He creates some angle on it with the taller & projectable frame. It runs arm-side and can be a problem for right-handed hitters. He also showed a low-70s curveball with a bigger 11/5 tilt to it and good depth to miss some bats. The Iowa Western commit threw 5.0 innings, allowing just 1 run, with 4 walks and 6 strikeouts to his credit.   There’s no surprise here, but...

The 5-foot-10, 175-pound, RHP did his job for his team today to keep them in the game. Flores throws with a high leg lift and creates some good motions towards the plate with his whippy action. Flores has a great feel for the zone and pounded strikes at a 66% rate. Flores generated swing and miss after swing and miss and it was clear he was in control out there on the mound. He sat in the 70-mph range to 79-mph range with his fastball with the ability to pinpoint it wherever he pleased....

James Sherry (’26, Aiken, S.C.)- the 6-foot-1, 155-pound right-handed pitcher tossed a complete game for Xtreme Xposure Baseball-Bennett in an 8-1 win over 2 Way Athletics 16U. A primary outfielder, Sherry finished with 15 strikeouts and just one walk while controlling the zone at a 65% strike rate. Appearing in only his second PG tournament, Sherry turned in another great pitching performance after being selected to the All-Tournament Team at the 2023 16U PG Southeast Labor Day Classic. A high speed look at this 2B from Keon Johnson... #WWBAWorlds @PG_Georgia https://t.co/Ejl8GirIgk pic.twitter.com/ate7ro35cp — Perfect Game Scout (@PG_Scouting) September 24, 2023 Keon Johnson (2026, Macon, Ga.) started off the morning loud, going down to get a pitch down and smoking a double that split the opposite field gap at a 92 mph exit velocity. The shortstop has one of the best hit tools in the class and has tremendous feel for the barrel. The swing is quiet and simple, staying loose through the zone. The ball jumps and the parts really work. At short, Johnson looked silky with good actions, range, and plenty of arm strength across. The game comes easy for the Georgia native, and still just 15, the all-around game is very well-refined for the age.  Jaxson Wood (2026, Hoover, Ala.) finished batting .500 over the tournament, including three extra-base hits. Patrick Kovacs (2026 Knoxville TN) was dominant in his outing in game two of pool play for Exposure National. The southpaw tossed three scoreless innings allowing two hits while striking out eight. He showed plus command of the fastball dotting it to both sides of the plate while working off the corners at times. Patrick sat 75-78 topping at 79 multiple times throughout. He mixed in a tight breaking ball with two plane movement that he had no problem mixing in any count keeping the opposing hitters off balanced in the box. Coming from a mid 3/4s slot there was some deception within the operation making it tough to pick the fastball up out of the hand. The frame has plenty of athleticism within with plenty of more room for additional strength as he continues to mature. Kovacs should be a fun follow as he continues to progress through high school. Ryan Riojas (‘26 TN) drives this...

The big and physical 6-foot-4, 210-pound arm threw a complete game, seven inning, one-hit shutout, striking out 13 and walking one. The fastball had downhill life to it, sitting in the 85-88 range for the entirety of the game. Garrison held the velocity and reached back for his fastest bullet of the game, at 89, in the seventh inning. Finishing the outing with 70% strikes, he filled up the zone and went right at hitters. Jack Harley (2024, Mendham, NJ) put together a dominant performance at the plate in the WWBA NEQ, leading his team to a coveted Jupiter bid while also earning MVP-honors. The 6-foot-1 left-handed hitter showcased his advanced bat-to-ball skills on several occasions. He batted .643 with two doubles, a home run and six stolen bases. Harley utilizes a repeatable, synced-up stroke with clean separation into launch. He has a great feel for the barrel and creates good strength at impact to all parts of the diamond. The future Hokie recorded a hit in all six of his games and proved to be a reliable bat at the top-of-the-order for Clubhouse 2024 EvoShield. Nathan Caldwell (2026, Columbia, S.C.) looked the part in the batter’s box as the Team Elite three-hole hitter had one of the hardest hit balls of the day. There’s really impressive bat speed and the ability to create violence and rotational acceleration through contact. He missiled a single during the game and there looks like there’s going to be pretty significant impact potential long term. He’s a strong kid with good indicators and offensive tools to like. Drew Borkowski (2026, Huntley, Ill.) showed plenty to like in the arm as he got the start in game one on the day for GRB. At 6-foot-1, 170-pounds he’s got a lanky frame with long limbs and plenty of room for physical projection. It’s a quick arm with solid arm speed throughout and he opened up sitting 85-87 mph with the fastball. The fastball showed good sinking life and he used it to get a lot...
