MARIETTA, Ga. -- After
a rough first day, Yankees Corozal acquired their fifth victory on
Tuesday leaving them 5-1 overall with just one pool game left.
The
Yankees defeated Team Elite 15u Black 7-1 after a six-run rally in
the fourth inning. This was a big win for the Yankees since the Elite
had also had a 4-1 record going into the game.
“The
kids did what they were supposed to do and we came out with a
victory,” said head coach Eliud Reyes.
Yelnie
Rivera pitched a solid five innings giving up only one run and two
walks. He struck three out. Rivera is the Yankees “top prospect
pitcher,” according to Reyes.
Luis
Rodriguez was able to hold the Elite at one run during his time on
the mound in the sixth inning.
The
Yankees also did well at the plate. They scored six runs in the
fourth inning securing their lead. Luis Gomez went 2-for-3 on
the day with two singles. Gomez, Juan Ortega, Kevin Davila and Felix
Baez all got hits in the fourth inning.
The
Yankees came all the way from Puerto Rico to give it their all.
“(We
wanted) exposure for our kids. This is the best tournament in the
nation so we had to be here,” said Reyes.
For
their first time competing in a Perfect Game event as a team, the Yankees are
doing pretty well. They lost their first game to the Charlotte
Megastars but have won every game since.
“We
had a bad first day,” explained Reyes, “The kids just got off the
plane basically and were a little startled, so we’ve been having to
fight back.”
Reyes
mentioned shortstop Baez and second baseman Christian Reyes as some
of his team’s top prospects. Baez has made no errors in the field
throughout this tournament and has 15 putouts. Christian Reyes has only made
one error and has 12 putouts.
Angel
Garcia has a .529 batting average and already has a home run under his belt.
“(Garcia) has been killer in this tournament,” said Reyes.
Reyes is hoping that his entire team can lead them to a victory in Wednesday’s game against
the Dulin Dodgers 15u. The
Yankees are now second in their pool behind the Dodgers who are 6-0.
If the Yankees defeat the Dodgers, both teams will have a 6-1 record.
Perfect
Game tournament playing rules explains that if two teams in a
pool are tied, the head to head winner will advance to the playoffs.
Coach
Reyes said he is “not at all” worried about the game on
Wednesday.
“If
the kids do their job then we will come out with a victory.”
