17u World Series Scout Notes: Day 1





Derek Schaefer (2023, Phoenix, Ariz.) continues to impress this summer as one of the top arms in the entire country. The Tennessee commit was solid over three innings and posted four strikeouts in the process. Clean and efficient with potential for a four-pitch mix on the hill. Fastball was up to 91-92 mph with good life up in the zone. The slider was really a standout, showing great feel and late 8-4 shape with good tilt at 77-79 mph. Shows potential to be more than a solid out pitch at the next level. Also threw in a tight breaking ball and fading changeup to the arm side. Lean, athletic build with sound mechanics. Produces easy velocity from an easy high three-quarter release. Schaffer continues to perform at some of the biggest tournaments this summer, and he can be a potential close watch for next year’s draft class.
