16u BCS Scout Notes: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4

The 16u BCS Platinum Playoffs started this afternoon at the Lee County Player Development Complex and three games highlighted the action. Team Elite 16u Premier and Scorpions 2021 Select Kelly squared off in a game that was a give and take affair finally captured by the home-standing Scorpions.

Eli Durnell (2021, Suwanee, GA), a rising junior at Greater Atlanta Christian HS, helped the Team Elite nine put five runs on the board in the top of the first inning. The 5-foot-11, 165-pound righthanded hitter used a short, direct swing path and a middle-of-the field approach to go 2-for-3 on the day and drive in three runs.

The Scorpions 2021 Select Kelly team was not to be denied, however, as they battled back with three in the bottom of the first and eventually overcame the early five-run deficit to post the well-earned, 8-6 victory.

Pacing the offense for the Scorps was Nicky Fusco (2021, West Palm Beach, Fla.).  The 5-foot-10, 160-pound, junior-to-be at Forest Hill Community HS is deceptively strong and uses a solid lower half to help him drive the ball to all parts of the park. He uses a flatter path and appears to have no problem getting his barrel consistently to the ball. His 2-for-3 day included a well-struck double. His two knocks on the afternoon plated three runs for the winners.

Cade Haddix (2021, Winter Park, Fla.) also had a nice day at the dish for the Scorpions. The 6-foot, 170-pound Winter Park HS junior also had two big knocks and scored two runs, while driving in two. The athletic Haddix is also a heady runner who takes an aggressive approach on the basepaths.

Central Florida USA 2021 Team Elite rode the talented left arm of Drew Elkins (2021, Huntington, W.Va.) to a solid 6-2 win over Gatorball in first round playoff action. The 5-foot-11, 175-pound lefthander, who will be a junior at Cabell Midland HS, used smooth, easy and repeatable mechanics and an advanced ability to pitch to the edges with a commendable 79-82 mph fastball and a tight spinning, 68-70 mph, 12-to-6 curveball. His ability to add and subtract velocity on both pitches made him especially tough for five solid innings. He only allowed two hits during his outing and struck our four in picking up the well-earned victory.

Pacing the Central Florida efforts offensively were two outstanding hitters. Trey Rucker (2021, Boerne, Texas) got his club on the board in the first inning with a booming triple to the deepest part of center field. His soaring knock plated two Central Florida runners, giving his club a lead that they would never relinquish. The athletically gifted IMG Academy junior is also stellar at shortstop. His quick feet, smooth fielding actions, ability to cover a lot of ground and advanced arm strength help him make plays that only a few at this level can.

Avery Robertson (2021, Rossville, Tenn.) is a 5-foot-11, 190-pound bundle of muscle who can drive a baseball. The Briarcrest Christian Academy junior uses a powerful lower half and plus torque with every pass to hit the ball to the biggest parts of the yard. His 2-for-4 day included a ringing double. He also scored a run for the victors.

The FBH Angels overwhelming offense carried the load in their 14-6 win over Team Siege 2021 Prospects in the first round playoff action. Jose Ramierz (2022, Lakeland, Fla.) helped get the Angels’ offense off and running early. His short and compact swing has a slight lift at contact and his quick hands and ability to get his barrel to the ball consistently, make him a tough out. The rising sophomore at Lakeland Senior HS is also an accomplished baserunner with plus speed.

David Fackson (2021, Valrico, Fla.) is a slugger who can drive the ball to the deepest part of any park. The 6-foot, 220-pound Durant HS junior-to-be, uses his strong lower half and classic lefthanded path to get his barrel to the ball with a pronounced lift at contact. His outstanding day saw him go 3-for-3. He also scored a run and drove in three big runs for the victorious Angels.

Pacing the Team Siege 2021 Prospects on offense was Dylan Boyd (2021, Miami, Fla.). The rising junior at Coral Reef Senior HS is a 5-foot-11, 155-pound line drive hitter with a smooth approach and a flat path that produces well-struck hits to all parts of the field. His 2-for-3 day included a barreled-up double.

The starting pitcher for Merc Elite Baseball on Thursday was righthander Owen Mezzanotte Zadrozny (2021, Cumberland, R.I.). Zadrozny threw a heavy fastball that he had up to 89 mph and was sitting 85-86. He also showed a curveball that he did not throw much at 72 mph but it did look good when he threw it. His better secondary pitch was his changeup that was 77 mph and had hitters swinging right over top of it. Zadrozny has a large frame at 6-foot-3, 220-pounds and his fastball really gets on hitters in a hurry. He threw 5 1/3 innings while striking out five and eliciting a lot of weakly hit balls.

Third baseman for Team Tomahawk Select 2021 was leadoff hitter McCage Pruitt (2021, Voldosta, Ga.). Pruitt looked great at the plate going 2-for-2 with two doubles and he scored three runs on Thursday. He also showed off some good defense making plays to both sides of him and showing off a strong arm across the diamond. Pruitt is 5-foot-8, 167-pounds and shows off good present strength, especially in his legs. Pruitt is a tough out at the plate and he showed that on Thursday finding consistent barrels and making hard contact. Pruitt will continue to develop over the next couple of years and become an even better ballplayer.

Eldred J George (2021, Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico)started at shortstop for IBAHS Knights Prime 2021 and looked sharp on defense. George is very smooth at short making all his plays look routine using his soft hands and strong arm. He also has good range, which comes from his good speed, that he also showed off on the basepaths being a threat to steal a bag. George is 5-foot-9, 135-pounds and has plenty of room to fill out and get stronger. He went 1-for-4 on the day with a bases-clearing double that he hit hard. George’s hitting and power will get better once his strength starts to increase, and adding in his great defense he will become an even better player.

Creighton Tuzzio (2024, Clarinda, Iowa) took the ball in the semi-final game and was able to get on the bump and carve for his team. Tuzzio is a taller 6-foot-6, 210-pound frame with plenty to like in the operation. The right-handed pitcher has a slower and more controlled operation as he works through the delivery. He lifts the leg up around the belt and then works through a three-quarters release with good whip through it. The fastball worked up to 86 mph on the fastball and held in the low- to mid-80s. He creates some angle on it with the taller & projectable frame. It runs arm-side and can be a problem for right-handed hitters. He also showed a low-70s curveball with a bigger 11/5 tilt to it and good depth to miss some bats. James Sherry (’26, Aiken, S.C.)- the 6-foot-1, 155-pound right-handed pitcher tossed a complete game for Xtreme Xposure Baseball-Bennett in an 8-1 win over 2 Way Athletics 16U. A primary outfielder, Sherry finished with 15 strikeouts and just one walk while controlling the zone at a 65% strike rate. Appearing in only his second PG tournament, Sherry turned in another great pitching performance after being selected to the All-Tournament Team at the 2023 16U PG Southeast Labor Day Classic. Patrick Kovacs (2026 Knoxville TN) was dominant in his outing in game two of pool play for Exposure National. The southpaw tossed three scoreless innings allowing two hits while striking out eight. He showed plus command of the fastball dotting it to both sides of the plate while working off the corners at times. Patrick sat 75-78 topping at 79 multiple times throughout. He mixed in a tight breaking ball with two plane movement that he had no problem mixing in any count keeping the opposing hitters off balanced in the box. Coming from a mid 3/4s slot there was some deception within the operation making it tough to pick the fastball up out of the hand. The frame has plenty of athleticism within with plenty of more room for additional strength as he continues to mature. Kovacs should be a fun follow as he continues to progress through high school. Jack Harley (2024, Mendham, NJ) put together a dominant performance at the plate in the WWBA NEQ, leading his team to a coveted Jupiter bid while also earning MVP-honors. The 6-foot-1 left-handed hitter showcased his advanced bat-to-ball skills on several occasions. He batted .643 with two doubles, a home run and six stolen bases. Harley utilizes a repeatable, synced-up stroke with clean separation into launch. He has a great feel for the barrel and creates good strength at impact to all parts of the diamond. The future Hokie recorded a hit in all six of his games and proved to be a reliable bat at the top-of-the-order for Clubhouse 2024 EvoShield. Nathan Caldwell (2026, Columbia, S.C.) looked the part in the batter’s box as the Team Elite three-hole hitter had one of the hardest hit balls of the day. There’s really impressive bat speed and the ability to create violence and rotational acceleration through contact. He missiled a single during the game and there looks like there’s going to be pretty significant impact potential long term. He’s a strong kid with good indicators and offensive tools to like. Drew Borkowski (2026, Huntley, Ill.) showed plenty to like in the arm as he got the start in game one on the day for GRB.
