17u NE Championship Preview

Andrew Snyder

In what should prove to be an exciting weekend, the WWBA 17u Summer Championship will bring to the table a plethora of excellent young talent. Held in Long Island, New York, the Summer Championship features teams from
across the northeast region, all hoping to showcase their talents as well as their potential to play across the next level. Here are the teams watch heading into this extended weekend of baseball.

Team Beast 2020 Gibson will bring to the table a multitude of prospects already committed to top programs nationwide. Channing Austin, a 2020 IF/RHP who is set to play at the University of Virginia, will lead Team Beast into the beginnings of pool play. Ranked in the top 500 for the class of 2020, Austin topped out at 92 off the bump at the 17 WWBA National Championship in Georgia. Also taking the field for Team Beast is 2020 Duke commit James Vaughn. Vaughn was spotted in Georgia sitting in the mid 80’s with his fastball, topping out at 87 on the hill.

Another team playing underneath the Team Beast namesake this weekend is MVP Beast. The roster includes 2021 top 20 prospect Christian Moore. Moore, a Tennessee commit, is the number one overall prospect in the state of New York for his grad class. Also highlight the roster for MVP Beast includes 2020 top 500 prospects Devin Rivera, Bryan Padilla, and Xavier Cruz. With plenty of top-shelf talent to go around, MVP Beast looks to be one of the favorites to win it all this weekend.

Another serious contender competing in Long Island this weekend is Tri-State Arsenal 17u National. Tri-State’s roster is lined with prospects on Perfect Game’s high follow list, including outfielders Jack Greco and Carlos Hidalgo. Tr-State’s wide reach in the Northeast region routinely tracks down some of the best talent in the area, making this 17u National team an immediate contender for the title this weekend.

One matchup to watch this weekend occurs on Friday Morning, when Team Beast 2020 Gibson takes on Zoom Baseball Academy Black. Both teams have Division one talent on their roster, and depending upon the pitching matchup we could be in for an excellent combination in pool play.

The talent pool is deep for the weekend, and there will be even more to go around given the 15u WWBA Northeast Summer Championship going on in the same weekend. With plenty to watch out for, it’s a concentration of talent that will surely impress.
