18u BCS Scout Notes

The catcher for Okotoks Dawgs 18u Black is Ayden Makarus (2019, Airdrie, Alberta, Canada) who showed his tools both offensively and defensively on Monday. He went 2-for-3 on the day, absolutely smoking one ball up the middle and he dropped down a bunt and showed off his speed for another base hit. Behind the plate he blocks very well and has a strong arm and showed a 2.09 pop time. Makarus is 6-foot-2, 205-pounds and is a very strong player who is committed to Louisiana State University-Eunice.

Another product of Okotoks Dawgs 18u Black is center fielder Micah McDowell (2019, Okotoks, Alberta, Canada), who was named the event’s Most Valuable Player with its conclusion on Saturday. McDowell went 1-for-2 with a bomb to right field. He has good pull-side pop and is confident hitting to all fields. McDowell has very calm hands and looks to do damage early in counts with pitches he can handle. McDowell also showed off his speed in center making catches in the gap with ease. McDowell, who is committed to Oregon State, has a very bright future ahead of himself.




One of the starting pitchers for FBH Angles 18U was Isaac Moreno (2019, Ona, Fla.). Moreno was lights out throwing six innings of shutout baseball, striking out six. Moreno, who is uncommitted, had his fastball up to 87 mph and showcased a good curveball at 68 mph. He stands at 6-foot, 185-pounds and has an athletic build. Moreno works to get ahead, attacking hitters with strikes early in counts and uses his secondary offerings for his out-pitches. He has a very smooth arm action and pitches with a lot of confidence.




Game two starting pitcher was lefthander Jayden Bishop (2019, Zephyrhills, Fla.). Bishop showed command with three pitches including his 85 mph fastball, 74 mph curveball and 77 mph changeup. He threw all three pitches for strikes in any count throughout his outing. Bishop pitches with a lot of confidence on the mound and he is exciting to watch. Bishop went four innings, striking out five and didn’t allow an earned run. He is 5-foot-11, 165-pounds and has room to fill out. Bishop is committed to play at Hillsborough Community College.

Another Hillsborough Community College commit, Wilbert Javier Vargas (2019, Oldsmar, Fla.), had himself a day, going 4-for-7 with two doubles, a triple and three runs scored on Monday. At 5-foot-9, 162 pounds he has great speed and good power. He drove balls all over the yard with ease and flew around the bases all day, leading to two stolen bases. He has good bat speed and plays the game very hard which makes him a very fun player to watch.

Keniel Carrion (2019, Carolina, Puerto Rico) had himself a day on Tuesday going 4-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Carrion, who is uncommitted, stands at 6-foot, 160-pounds and has a lot of room to fill out. Carrion has great speed and it shows while he is in center running balls down. Also when he is on the bases he is a threat to steal a bag any pitch. He has a very smooth swing with calm hands and good bat speed.

The shortstop for Okotoks Dawgs 18u Black is Ricardo Sanchez (2020, Mexico City, Mexico). Sanchez is a very good defender with soft hands and a strong arm. He makes every play look easy at short with his great athleticism and he plays with a lot of confidence and energy and is a leader on defense. He also has a good swing as he stays in his legs very well and is a line drive hitter. Sanchez, who is uncommitted, will continue to get stronger and is a player to keep an eye on.

Paxton Tomaini (2020, Crawfordville, Fla.) is a switch-hitting shortstop for Powermill Jowers-18u who displayed pop from both sides of the plate and looks comfortable hitting on either side. Tomaini is a tough out as he does not swing at bad pitches and looks for his pitch to hit. Defensively, Tomaini has soft hands and a strong arm and he has no problem coming in on balls to make strong throws to first while on the run. Tomaini, who is uncommitted, is a fun shortstop to watch and he will look to continue to dominate this summer.

Nate Moeller (2019, St. Petersburg, Fla.) looked confident at the plate all tournament and it especially showed on Thursday. Moeller went 2-for-2 with three RBI making some loud contact. He stands in the lefthanded batters box at 6-foot-3, 185-pounds, displaying good pull-side pop and room to get a lot stronger. Moeller is very athletic at first base and plays good defense. He has good footwork around the bag with good picking ability and is committed to Florida State College at Jacksonville.

A starting pitcher for the South Florida Bullsharks Grey was Yaxiel Tapia (2020, North Miami, Fla.). Tapia, who is uncommitted, threw three innings while giving up only two hits and striking out five. He had his fastball up to 89 mph while sitting 86-87 and it had some arm-side run to it. He also had his 11-to-5 breaking curveball at 70 mph and hitters were swinging and missing at it all day. Tapia has a very athletic stature, a very fluid arm action and lives in the bottom of the zone which helps make him so successful.

The shortstop for the Florida Grind is Nathan Weber (2020, Milton Fla.). Weber is 5-foot-11, 165-pounds and is very athletic with room to get stronger. Weber, who is uncommitted, has a very strong arm and he gets the hop that he wants when fielding ground balls. At the plate, Weber has good pull-side pop and looks to drive the ball into the gaps. Weber went 2-for-3 with a double and a triple on Thursday.

Florida Southern commit Justin Wit (2019, Lynn Haven, Fla.) threw a great game on Friday for the Florida Grind. Wit threw 5 1/3 innings striking out seven and not allowing an earned run. Wit had his heavy fastball up to 85 mph while sitting at 81-83. He is tall and lengthy standing at 6-foot-3, 175-pounds and his fastball really gets on hitters quick. Wit also showed a curveball at 70 mph that had good 11-to-5 break to it. He has room to increase his strength and his velocity moving forward at the next level.

Starting on the mound for Figs Upperclass was uncommitted righthanded pitcher Mitchell Fairgrieve (2019, St. Johns, Fla.). Fairgrieve threw six innings, striking out eight and only allowing three hits. He threw his fastball at 84 mph with good run and sinking action to it. He threw his fastball in to righties very well, eliciting a lot of weak contact consistently jamming hitters on the inner half. He also throws a very tight, hard slider at 78 mph. His slider had a lot of hitters swinging and missing and he used it when ahead of the count as his strikeout pitch. Fairgrave dominated on the mound, working at his pace, and he will be a fun pitcher to continue to follow this summer.

Playing shortstop for Figs Upperclass was Fran Valenzuela (2019, Dominican Republic), a very good defensive player who is very athletic and has a good arm. He has a smooth, contact-oriented swing with some pull-side pop. He went 2-for-4 Friday morning with a hard-hit double and he also bunted for a base hit. Valenzuela, who is uncommitted, will continue to get stronger and consistently drive the baseball while playing great defense.

Starting for Okotoks Dawgs 18u Black on Friday was Matt Wilkinson (2020, Okotoks, Alberta, Canada). Wilkinson, who is uncommitted, threw 3 2/3 innings striking out four and not allowing an earned run. He stands 6-foot-1, 275-pounds and had his fastball up to 87 mph with natural lefty run to it. He also showed a very good curveball with slurve-type movement at 69 mph and a changeup at 75 mph. Wilkinson has three good pitches that he can throw for strikes and has a lot of potential for the future.




Oregon State commit Cesar Valero (2019, Calgary, Alberta, Canada) shinned all tournament, a great all-around player who did it all. He hits for power, has great speed and plays great defense. Valero stands at 6-foot-2, 186-pounds and is very athletic with a strong frame. He already has very good strength now and will only continue to get stronger. He also has very good bat speed and stays through the baseball very well. Valero played left field for most of the tournament and showed off his speed and strong arm from the position. Valero has a very bright future and will be a fun player to watch translate his game to college baseball.

Manning center field for SBO 17u was Adriel Mendoza (2020, Cayey, Puerto Rico), who is uncommitted. Mendoza is 6-feet, 175-pounds and has a very athletic build. He is a lefthanded hitter with gap-to-gap pop and he drove a ball to left-center on Friday, going 2-for-4 with three walks, two runs scored and a double. Mendoza has a very good eye at the plate and is a disciplined hitter with good strength and he is going to get stronger over the next year.

Creighton Tuzzio (2024, Clarinda, Iowa) took the ball in the semi-final game and was able to get on the bump and carve for his team. Tuzzio is a taller 6-foot-6, 210-pound frame with plenty to like in the operation. The right-handed pitcher has a slower and more controlled operation as he works through the delivery. He lifts the leg up around the belt and then works through a three-quarters release with good whip through it. The fastball worked up to 86 mph on the fastball and held in the low- to mid-80s. He creates some angle on it with the taller & projectable frame. It runs arm-side and can be a problem for right-handed hitters. He also showed a low-70s curveball with a bigger 11/5 tilt to it and good depth to miss some bats. James Sherry (’26, Aiken, S.C.)- the 6-foot-1, 155-pound right-handed pitcher tossed a complete game for Xtreme Xposure Baseball-Bennett in an 8-1 win over 2 Way Athletics 16U. A primary outfielder, Sherry finished with 15 strikeouts and just one walk while controlling the zone at a 65% strike rate. Appearing in only his second PG tournament, Sherry turned in another great pitching performance after being selected to the All-Tournament Team at the 2023 16U PG Southeast Labor Day Classic. Patrick Kovacs (2026 Knoxville TN) was dominant in his outing in game two of pool play for Exposure National. The southpaw tossed three scoreless innings allowing two hits while striking out eight. He showed plus command of the fastball dotting it to both sides of the plate while working off the corners at times. Patrick sat 75-78 topping at 79 multiple times throughout. He mixed in a tight breaking ball with two plane movement that he had no problem mixing in any count keeping the opposing hitters off balanced in the box. Coming from a mid 3/4s slot there was some deception within the operation making it tough to pick the fastball up out of the hand. The frame has plenty of athleticism within with plenty of more room for additional strength as he continues to mature. Kovacs should be a fun follow as he continues to progress through high school. Jack Harley (2024, Mendham, NJ) put together a dominant performance at the plate in the WWBA NEQ, leading his team to a coveted Jupiter bid while also earning MVP-honors. The 6-foot-1 left-handed hitter showcased his advanced bat-to-ball skills on several occasions. He batted .643 with two doubles, a home run and six stolen bases. Harley utilizes a repeatable, synced-up stroke with clean separation into launch. He has a great feel for the barrel and creates good strength at impact to all parts of the diamond. The future Hokie recorded a hit in all six of his games and proved to be a reliable bat at the top-of-the-order for Clubhouse 2024 EvoShield. Nathan Caldwell (2026, Columbia, S.C.) looked the part in the batter’s box as the Team Elite three-hole hitter had one of the hardest hit balls of the day. There’s really impressive bat speed and the ability to create violence and rotational acceleration through contact. He missiled a single during the game and there looks like there’s going to be pretty significant impact potential long term. He’s a strong kid with good indicators and offensive tools to like. Drew Borkowski (2026, Huntley, Ill.) showed plenty to like in the arm as he got the start in game one on the day for GRB.
