Sandlot 2018 keeps Upperclass Fall championship trophy in the Valley

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – It had already been a special summer on the Perfect Game tournament circuit for the Wilson Sandlot 2018 before what transpired on Monday in the west Phoenix suburbs. There was a championship at the PG WWBA 18u West Memorial Day Classic May 26-29 in the West Valley, followed-up the next weekend with a title at the PG WWBA 17u Qualifier in the East Valley. It turns out those might have just been appetizers ahead of the main course.

The Chandler-based and No. 5-seeded Sandlot 2018 were steady and sure from the first-pitch, and shutdown the No. 3 TB SoCal Gold from Los Angeles by a 4-0 count in the championship game at the PG WWBA Upperclass Fall National Championship Protected by G-Form played at Goodyear Ballpark.

The ‘Lot 2018 completed an impressive 7-0-0 run at the event to go alongside marks of 5-0-0 at both the PG WWBA WMDC and the PG WWBA 17u Q. That’s a 17-0 record for this team at three important PG-sanctioned western events; Monday’s championship proved to be the most satisfying of them all.

“The field in this weekend’s tournament was as good as it comes,” Sandlot 2018 head coach Kurt Vesecky said while his players were being fitted for their PG national championship tournament rings. “(TB SoCal Gold) is loaded – they’ve got guys going to UCLA and Michigan and Cal and all that kind of stuff – but we just battled all weekend.

"We had a 12-inning game (Sunday) with bases-loaded, one-out situations every (extra) inning with the tie-breaker, and these kids just continued to fight and fight and fight. I couldn’t be any more proud of these guys; they did an awesome job.”

The championship game was shaping up to be a pitchers’ duel until the Sandlot 2018 found the firepower to score three runs in the top of the fourth, which, as it turned out, was more than enough to send them on their way to the title. Bobby Meza Jr. singled and drove in a pair of runs, Colton Cassinelli – a No. 392-ranked 2018 who has committed to the U. of Washington and was the Most Valuable Player at the previous two PG tournaments this summer – delivered an RBI double; Tyler Cranston singled and drove in a run, with those performances pacing the ‘Lot 2018’s six-hit attack.

2018 right-hander Hayden Baker threw five innings of three-hit, shutout ball with two strikeouts and two walks to pick up the win; the TB SoCal Gold finished with four hits, all singles. Those came off the bats of Shawn Goosenberg, Chris Neveau, Keaton Carattini and Cary Arboliola who hit third, fourth, fifth and seventh in the batting order, but they could never bunch enough of them together to push a run across the plate.

The championship game appearance on the mound was the only one of the tournament for the 6-foot-2, 170-pound Baker, a U. of Pacific commit from Chandler, but it was good enough to earn him the Most Valuable Pitcher Award. Vesecky said he wished the award could go to the entire pitching staff based on outstanding outings by 2018 right-handers Jordan Bach, David Watson, Andrew Hayes, Chase Webster and Meza Jr., among others.

Speaking of Meza Jr., he made one appearance on the mound and worked 6 1/3, four-hit, shutout innings with six strikeouts and one walk. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound right-hander/third baseman and Yavapai College recruit out of Mesa was also 5-for-19 (.263) with a home run and a team-high 11 RBI at the plate, and was named the Most Valuable Player. He epitomized the attitude Vesecky expects from his players, especially when bracket-play rolls around.

“It’s a win-or-go-home mentality and these guys are brothers on the field as well as off the field and I think that’s a big part of it,” he said. “We’ve got some pitchers that are kind of on break right now and we picked up some guys from around the Valley to come join us, and we really had some guys who stepped-up.

"I couldn’t be more proud of their effort and what they did at this event. … Top-to-bottom, everybody on the team contributed and again, I just attribute that to the fact that they’re just brothers, both on and off the field.”

The Wilson Sandlot 2018 moved into the championship game posting a 5-2 victory over the No. 1 Aggies Baseball Upperclass (5-1-0) from Watsonville, Calif., in Monday morning semifinals. TB SoCal Gold got there by blanking No. 7 Chaminade College Prep (5-1-0) from Moorpark, Calif., in its semifinal contest.

The SoCal Gold earned the No. 3 seed by winning its three pool-play games by a combined 15-2. They then topped No. 19 All-Star Baseball Academy, 3-1, in the second-round of the playoffs before topping No. 11 CBA Marucci, 4-3, in the quarterfinals, both played Sunday afternoon. The Sandlot 2018 came in at No. 5 by coasting past their pool partners by a combined 18-4 and then topping the Quakes Baseball Academy, 10-2, and No. 4 GBG, 11-8 in 12 innings in 2nd-round and quarterfinal-round play, respectively.

When the chickens came home to roost after another long, hot day in the desert, the Sandlot 2018 took a lot of pride in keeping the championship trophy right here in the Valley. The Scottsdale-based AZ T-Rex Baseball Club Rawlings won the precursor to this event last year.

“If you look over the years it’s very rare for an Arizona team to win these events,” Vesecky said. “This is a very special group – the 2018 class is loaded in (the Phoenix area) and we come to play. We’re not afraid of anybody and, of course, we’re on our home turf so that makes it extra-special.”

Arizona 2021 tops Marucci 2021 in all-GBG final at Freshman Fall Championship

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The Garciaparra Baseball Group (GBG) laid claim to Goodyear Ballpark Monday morning, and put on an entertaining show in the championship game at the PG WWBA Freshman Fall National Championship Protected by G-Form.

No. 1-seeded GBG Arizona 2021 used a well-played, well-pitched performance to sneak past No. 2 GBG Marucci 2021, 3-2, and claim the crown at the inaugural Freshman Fall National Championship. The Peoria-based Arizona 2021s finished with an unblemished 6-0-0 mark at the four-day event, while the Los Angeles-based Marucci 2021s ended up 4-1-1.

The fact that two GBG teams were playing for the title wasn’t lost on anyone, least of all Arizona 2021 head coach Mike Schiefelbein.

“That definitely was special,” he said after dozens of postgame photos had been snapped by parents and well-wishers, including one big GBG group shot the two teams posed for.

“It was a thought that just kind of seem to come together as we got closer. And as we got into bracket-play being the 1 and the 2 seed, we knew that we weren’t going to see them until possibly the championship game. When it kind of fell into place, it was special and it was fun.”

Arizona 2021 scored a single run in the bottom of the first and two more in the bottom of the fourth while Marucci 2021 pushed across single runs in each of the top of the second and the fifth.

The Arizona kids totaled eight hits in the win, with Scott Wheeler and Michael Riley collecting two apiece. Wheeler, Tanner Smith and Andrew Biddle each drove in runs. Workhorse 2021 left-hander Carson Baker threw a complete-game four-hitter, allowing two earned runs while striking out seven and walking two.

Marucci 2021’s Jack Salmon accounted for two of Marucci 2021s four hits; Andre Meono and Joseph Tena each drove in a run apiece.

Smith, a 5-foot-8, 170-pound right-handed hitting catcher/infielder from Chandler, was named the Most Valuable Player; he finished 7-for-17 (.412) with a double, two triples, a home run with eight RBI.

Baker, a 5-foot-8, 135-pound lefty from Peoria, made three appearances and worked 10 1/3 innings, and gave up five hits with 11 strikeouts and two walks. He picked up the championship game win and recorded a two-pitch save in Monday morning’s semifinal game.

GBG Arizona 2021 came into this tournament with a lot of momentum that was generated last weekend when it won the championship at the PGBA Freshman Fall National Championship Qualifier played at Cubs Park Riverview in Mesa, Ariz. After winning that tournament, the players refocused and put their minds to coming in here and winning this thing. And, most importantly, they got the job done.

“I know that we walked into this stadium, for most of these kids it was the first time for them being here in a stadium like this,” Schiefelbein said. “That’s special for them and I think they take away from it the hopes of maybe one day playing in this stadium, whether it be at the high school level or beyond.

“To have the opportunity to play here on the big stage, so to speak, is special for them and I think we played well all around, offensively, defensively and pitching,” he continued. “And it was a great game, right down to the wire; a good win.”

Creighton Tuzzio (2024, Clarinda, Iowa) took the ball in the semi-final game and was able to get on the bump and carve for his team. Tuzzio is a taller 6-foot-6, 210-pound frame with plenty to like in the operation. The right-handed pitcher has a slower and more controlled operation as he works through the delivery. He lifts the leg up around the belt and then works through a three-quarters release with good whip through it. The fastball worked up to 86 mph on the fastball and held in the low- to mid-80s. He creates some angle on it with the taller & projectable frame. It runs arm-side and can be a problem for right-handed hitters. He also showed a low-70s curveball with a bigger 11/5 tilt to it and good depth to miss some bats. The Iowa Western commit threw 5.0 innings, allowing just 1 run, with 4 walks and 6 strikeouts to his credit.   There’s no surprise here, but...

The 5-foot-10, 175-pound, RHP did his job for his team today to keep them in the game. Flores throws with a high leg lift and creates some good motions towards the plate with his whippy action. Flores has a great feel for the zone and pounded strikes at a 66% rate. Flores generated swing and miss after swing and miss and it was clear he was in control out there on the mound. A high speed look at this 2B from Keon Johnson... #WWBAWorlds @PG_Georgia https://t.co/Ejl8GirIgk pic.twitter.com/ate7ro35cp — Perfect Game Scout (@PG_Scouting) September 24, 2023 Keon Johnson (2026, Macon, Ga.) started off the morning loud, going down to get a pitch down and smoking a double that split the opposite field gap at a 92 mph exit velocity. The shortstop has one of the best hit tools in the class and has tremendous feel for the barrel. The swing is quiet and simple, staying loose through the zone. The ball jumps and the parts really work. At short, Johnson looked silky with good actions, range, and plenty of arm strength across. The game comes easy for the Georgia native, and still just 15, the all-around game is very well-refined for the age.  Jaxson Wood (2026, Hoover, Ala.) finished batting .500 over the tournament, including three extra-base hits. Patrick Kovacs (2026 Knoxville TN) was dominant in his outing in game two of pool play for Exposure National. The southpaw tossed three scoreless innings allowing two hits while striking out eight. He showed plus command of the fastball dotting it to both sides of the plate while working off the corners at times. Patrick sat 75-78 topping at 79 multiple times throughout. He mixed in a tight breaking ball with two plane movement that he had no problem mixing in any count keeping the opposing hitters off balanced in the box. Coming from a mid 3/4s slot there was some deception within the operation making it tough to pick the fastball up out of the hand. The frame has plenty of athleticism within with plenty of more room for additional strength as he continues to mature. Kovacs should be a fun follow as he continues to progress through high school. Ryan Riojas (‘26 TN) drives this...

The big and physical 6-foot-4, 210-pound arm threw a complete game, seven inning, one-hit shutout, striking out 13 and walking one. The fastball had downhill life to it, sitting in the 85-88 range for the entirety of the game. Garrison held the velocity and reached back for his fastest bullet of the game, at 89, in the seventh inning. Finishing the outing with 70% strikes, he filled up the zone and went right at hitters. Jack Harley (2024, Mendham, NJ) put together a dominant performance at the plate in the WWBA NEQ, leading his team to a coveted Jupiter bid while also earning MVP-honors. The 6-foot-1 left-handed hitter showcased his advanced bat-to-ball skills on several occasions. He batted .643 with two doubles, a home run and six stolen bases. Harley utilizes a repeatable, synced-up stroke with clean separation into launch. He has a great feel for the barrel and creates good strength at impact to all parts of the diamond. The future Hokie recorded a hit in all six of his games and proved to be a reliable bat at the top-of-the-order for Clubhouse 2024 EvoShield. Nathan Caldwell (2026, Columbia, S.C.) looked the part in the batter’s box as the Team Elite three-hole hitter had one of the hardest hit balls of the day. There’s really impressive bat speed and the ability to create violence and rotational acceleration through contact. He missiled a single during the game and there looks like there’s going to be pretty significant impact potential long term. He’s a strong kid with good indicators and offensive tools to like. Drew Borkowski (2026, Huntley, Ill.) showed plenty to like in the arm as he got the start in game one on the day for GRB. At 6-foot-1, 170-pounds he’s got a lanky frame with long limbs and plenty of room for physical projection. It’s a quick arm with solid arm speed throughout and he opened up sitting 85-87 mph with the fastball. The fastball showed good sinking life and he used it to get a lot...
